Jaecoo J6 on test in Malaysia; EV SUV to debut soon?

The Jaecoo J6 had its first Malaysian showing in May 2024 at the Malaysia Autoshow that year, and now we’ve sighted the battery-electric SUV on Malaysian roads, specifically on the KESAS highway. Known in China as the iCar 03 (iCar is another Chery sub-brand), the J6 is due to launch in Malaysia this year, and its latest on-road sighting suggests it may be soon.

This is a short, but tall and wide SUV, measuring 4,406 mm long, 1,910 mm wide and 1,715 mm tall with a 2,715 mm wheelbase, and along with its boxy design cues, has hints of Land Rover Defender about it. Here, rolling stock appears to be of the two-tone alloy wheel design as seen on the Singapore display unit, which are 19-inch wheels in 225/55R19 tyres.

The right-hand-drive market version of the J6 such as the one in Singapore packs a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric powertrain delivering 279 PS and 385 Nm of torque. These draw from a 69.77 kWh BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, and is rated for 345 km of range on the WTLP testing standard. Conversely, a 3.3 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) function also features on the Singapore-market model.

Beyond the dual-motor AWD version, other markets get the J6 in RWD form with a single 184 PS/220 Nm motor, drawing from a 65.69 kWh LFP battery that yields up to 371 km of range on the WLTP testing standard.

In terms of equipment, the cabin of the SG-spec J6 will pack a 9.2-inch instrument display for the driver, along with a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. Smartphone connectivity is supported by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, joined by a voice assistant, a cooled 50 W Qi wireless device charger, panoramic glass roof and a 12-speaker Infinity sound system.

For safety and assistance systems, the Jaecoo J6 gets autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, a front departure alert, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and a door opening warning. Also standard are eight airbags and stability control.

When it launches in Malaysia, the J6 will bring a battery-electric entry to the brand, joining the plug-in hybrid offering that is the J7 PHEV that was launched in Malaysia in February this year (check out our review of the J7 PHEV here).
