Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to innovation and economic development in the United States. This grand opening signifies the completion of the largest economic development project in Georgia’s history, a feat achieved in just two and a half years after breaking ground.
Commitment to Innovation and Economic Growth
“Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America not only represents the Group’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and commitment to innovation, but also our investment in relationships with our partners and communities right here in Georgia,” stated Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group.
The grand opening ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung, Governor Brian P. Kemp, U.S. Representative Buddy Carter, and company officials, highlighting the plant’s importance to both state and national economies.
Transforming Georgia’s Economic Landscape
Governor Kemp emphasized HMGMA’s role in advancing manufacturing and cultivating a skilled workforce in Georgia. The partnership between HMGMA and Georgia’s universities, technical colleges, and Georgia Quick Start’s on-site training facility is preparing Georgians for high-quality jobs of the future.
HMG entered into an agreement with Georgia in May 2022 to establish a cutting-edge electric and hybrid vehicle production and battery manufacturing facility in Ellabell, Georgia. By October 2024, less than two years after breaking ground, the first Hyundai IONIQ 5 rolled off the assembly line. Production of the Hyundai IONIQ 9 has also commenced at Metaplant, with the first Kia model set to be built at the facility by 2026.

Unprecedented Investment and Economic Impact
The total investment related to HMGMA and joint battery ventures with LG Energy Solution and SK On amounts to $12.6 billion, the largest single investment in Georgia’s history. HMGMA is expected to generate nearly 40,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing $4.6 billion in annual earnings.
As of the end of 2024, HMGMA suppliers have announced over $2.5 billion in capital investment and approximately 6,900 new jobs across Georgia, doubling the originally anticipated supplier investment. Nationwide, Hyundai Motor Group has invested more than $20.5 billion in the U.S., creating or supporting over 570,000 jobs.
Recently, Hyundai announced an additional $21 billion investment in the U.S. from 2025 to 2028, with $9 billion allocated to increasing production capacity to 1.2 million vehicles annually. Plans also include enhancing parts and logistics operations and establishing a new steel mill with an annual capacity of 2.7 million tons.
Cutting-Edge Technology and Sustainable Design
HMGMA integrates proof-of-concept manufacturing technologies from Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), optimizing production through AI and real-time data. Robotics, automated guided vehicles, and advanced quality inspection systems enhance automation, making HMGMA one of the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the U.S.
The facility features an employee-centric design, incorporating natural light, open workspaces, and an ecological park spanning 41 acres with trails, running tracks, and sports fields. A solar parking lot generates 5.2 megawatts of energy, supplying 5% of the plant’s power consumption.

Hydrogen-Powered Logistics and Community Engagement
HMGMA has implemented 21 Hyundai Motor XCIENT heavy-duty hydrogen fuel-cell electric trucks for clean logistics operations, reducing carbon emissions while promoting sustainable practices.
Hyundai Motor Group continues to invest in community initiatives, having donated nearly $4.5 million to local organizations in Georgia since 2022. Kia’s Autoland Georgia factory has provided over $22 million in community support since 2009, reinforcing Hyundai’s dedication to corporate social responsibility.
The Future of Hyundai Manufacturing in America
HMGMA represents a transformative step in the future of mobility, combining cutting-edge technology, sustainable manufacturing, and strategic economic investment. With Hyundai Motor Group’s unwavering commitment to growth, innovation, and community development, the Metaplant is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of automotive production in the United States.
