HVAC and Headunit Button Replacement | SwedeSpeed

Recently bought a 2014 XC90, and some of the buttons on the HVAC control and head unit were peeling. I wonder if some cigarette lighter accessory got extremely hot, or if it was the kind of crazy reflection and concentration of light that can melt your vinyl siding hitting this edge.

This post suggested that these buttons were not individually replaceable. However they are offered as individual parts on some dealer parts websites. I figured I’d try to find out when I found a comparable HVAC control in a V70 at my junkyard. I pulled the HVAC control panel out, partially removed the cover trim and gave a button a pull with a pry tool. The cap popped off revealing it is held to the actual switch at 4 snap-fit points.

With the control panel cover off, it was easy enough to pop off all 4 button caps with some regular trim removal tools. If you have the panel cover off, I found it easiest to get at them from the inside middle where the buttons abut. Just get a firm purchase on the bottom lip of the button cap and give it a firm pop up. Clench, pray, and hope the 10+ year old plastic holds. The covers themselves are pretty sturdy and thick. I’d be more worried about the catch points on the switch breaking off as you’re removing from the control panel you will put the better caps on. If you don’t know, the clear things sticking out the back are light pipes which I just find cool.

If you’re removing the caps without taking out your control panel and removing the front cover, it’s going to be more difficult. I was using some cheap phone and electronics spudgers that were neither thin or firm enough to get under the first button from between the two and get purchase on the lip, or fit in around the outside of the button. With much pulling and gripping I got the passenger heated seat cap off and the driver side was easy then. I would try some thin metal spudgers and pry bars in the future.
For the rear defrost button I noticed the caps had reliefs on the outside and wanted to try to catch that and see if it was easier.

The problem was, either I only looked at the heated seat buttons which had the reliefs in the middle, or the replacements I had only had reliefs on the middle but the ones I pulled out have the reliefs on the top outside corner. I was going at the outside with a metal pick and put a divot in the cover. If you’re coming at them from the outside, proceed with caution.

But again, with one out, it’s trivial to get purchase on its neighbor and pop it off. As far as I could see, 0/16 snap points on the switches broke and the 4 replacements fit perfectly. Yes the colors are different from the other buttons but they’re better than the right color peeling off, which is also why I replaced all 4 when it was really just the right side ones that were bad.

For the CD Eject and Menu Down buttons, I didn’t find any replacements that day on my yard. All the XC90 head units were gone and the sedans and XC60 all had different units. However the selector wheel to the eject button appears to be a separate module that can be had cheaply on eBay. Since that menu down button sticks for me, I may replace the whole module but I’ll also check and report back if the button caps are held to the switches in the same way.

Best of luck to you and your fixing.
