Why your QuickBooks has Stopped Working?

The QuickBooks application has stopped working issue can occur due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Size of the QuickBooks company file is large.
  • Corruption in QBWUSER.INI file.
  • Corruption in QuickBooks Company file.
  • Folder where the company file is saved is damaged or corrupted.
  • Outdated QuickBooks application.
  • Corrupted or damaged installation files of QuickBooks application.
  • Special characters in the name of company file.

Troubleshooting Methods to Fix the QuickBooks has Stopped Working Issue

The QuickBooks application may stop working or responding if the program/installation files are damaged or corrupted. In such a case, you can try repairing the QuickBooks application. To repair the application, open Control Panel on your system, click Programs, and then click Program and Features. It will display the list of installed programs. Search and right-click on QuickBooks and then click Repair. After the repair process is complete, try to open your QuickBooks application. If this workaround fails, then follow the below troubleshooting methods.

Method 1 – Close QuickBooks and Related Processes

Sometimes, the QuickBooks not responding issue can occur if multiple QuickBooks.exe processes are running in the background. In such a case, you can check and close all the QuickBooks-related processes. Here is how to do so:

  • Press CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously and then click Task Manager.
  • Click the Processes tab and search for all processes with the word QuickBooks in the name.
  • Find each process, select it, and then click on the End Process option at the bottom right corner of Task Manager.

Once you close all the QuickBooks processes, then start the QuickBooks application. If the issue is not fixed, follow the next method.

Method 2 – Repair your Company File

QuickBooks has an in-built tool, called Verify and Rebuild Data that verifies and rebuilds the company file data. If the QBW file is damaged or corrupted, you can use this tool to rebuild the file data. It can help resolve company file-related errors and recover missing transactions from the corrupted company file. Here’s how to use this tool:

Note: Before using this tool, close all the active windows on your system.

  • In QuickBooks (if it is opening), click the File option.
  • Click Utilities and then select Verify Data.

If the Verify Data utility does not find any issue, it will return a message stating, “QuickBooks detected no problem with your data.” However, if it finds any issue, then it prompts that a rebuild is required.

To rebuild the QuickBooks company file, follow the given steps:

  • Click the File menu and then click Utilities.
  • Next, click Rebuild Data.
  • A dialog box appears on the screen asking you to create a backup of the company file. Click OK.
  • Select the location where you need to save the backup file and then click OK.
  • Click OK on the message that reads “Rebuild has completed.”

Now again click File > Utilities and select Verify Data to check if the issue is fixed.

However, if it does not work, you can use the QuickBooks File Doctor tool to repair mildly corrupted company file. The tool may not be effective if you don’t have admin credentials to access QuickBooks or if the company file is large.

To repair severely corrupted or damaged company file, the optimal and the best option is to use a reliable third-party QuickBooks repair tool, such as Stellar Repair for QuickBooks. It can easily repair highly corrupted large-sized QBW files and QBB files with complete integrity. Also, it helps you recover all the company file data, including charts of accounts and employees, from the damaged QBW file. Method 3 – Download and Use QuickBooks Tool Hub

You can download the QuickBooks tool hub to resolve the QuickBooks not responding issue. After launching the tool hub, run the tools under the Program Problems tab. This will help in resolving QuickBooks program issues. Follow the steps below:

  • Download, install, and launch the QuickBooks tool hub.
  • In the Tool hub, click Program Problems.
  • Run the tools, like Quick Fix my Program and QuickBooks Program Diagnostic.
