Working from home sounds amazing, right? No commute, no office drama, and you get to wear whatever you want. But if you’ve tried it, you probably already know it’s not always as easy as it seems. Distractions are everywhere, motivation dips, and suddenly the whole day’s gone and you’ve ticked off maybe one thing on your to-do list.

If that sounds familiar, don’t worry. You’re not doing anything wrong. It just takes a bit of practice and a few small tweaks to make working from home actually work for you. Let’s go through some tried and tested tips to help you stay focused, get more done, and still have time to enjoy the perks of home life.

Start With a Morning Routine

When you roll out of bed and dive straight into work, your brain doesn’t get the chance to properly wake up. You’re not setting yourself up for a focused day. Instead, give yourself a bit of space in the morning before checking emails or jumping into tasks. Go for a quick walk, make a nice breakfast, stretch, or just sit with a coffee for ten minutes. Whatever helps you feel like a human being before the chaos starts. A good morning routine acts like a reset button and gets your mind in gear.

Create a Space That Feels Like “Work Mode”

One of the hardest parts about working from home is the blurred line between your home life and work life. If you’re answering emails from your sofa or doing Zoom calls from your bed, it’s no wonder your brain’s a bit confused. You don’t need a fancy home office, but having a designated spot that says “this is where I work” really helps. It could be the corner of your dining table or a desk in the hallway. The important thing is that it feels different from your chill-out space.

If you’re going to be sitting for most of the day, your body’s going to feel it. That’s where affordable office furniture makes a huge difference. You don’t need to spend loads, but it’s worth getting a chair that actually supports your back and a desk that’s the right height. When you’re comfortable, it’s easier to concentrate and avoid those mid-afternoon slumps where everything starts to ache and you end up on the floor with your laptop. Yes, we’ve all been there.

Time Blocks Over To-Do Lists

To-do lists are great, but they can also be overwhelming. Ever write out a list that looks totally manageable, only to get through two things and wonder where the day went? Same. Try blocking out chunks of time instead. For example, set 9 to 10.30 for emails, 10.30 to 12 for deep work, and so on. Then give yourself proper breaks in between. It helps you stay focused on one task at a time and stops that feeling of “I should be doing ten things right now.”

Use the Two-Minute Rule

This one’s simple but seriously effective. If a task takes two minutes or less, do it straight away. Reply to that message, send the invoice, file the document. These tiny things add up quickly, and getting them out the way clears your brain for bigger stuff. It also helps avoid that weird stress where you’ve got twenty tiny jobs hanging over you. Just knock them out and move on.

Don’t Work in Silence

Silence can be great for focus, but it can also make the day feel a bit lonely. If you miss the background noise of an office, try playing some low music, listening to a podcast, or even watching a YouTube video with café sounds. It tricks your brain into feeling like you’re not totally isolated, which can actually help you stay on task. If music distracts you, even having a fan on or opening a window for natural sound can help.

Set Clear “Work Hours” and Stick to Them

One of the easiest traps to fall into when working from home is never really clocking off. You check one more email at 8 pm or reply to a message on a Sunday, and before you know it, work creeps into every part of your life. Setting clear hours helps both you and the people you work with. It says “this is when I’m available” and gives you permission to fully switch off once the day’s done. You’ll be more productive during work time because you know there’s a finish line.

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To

If your workday is just one long stretch of tasks, it’s no wonder your motivation drops. Try building in small things to look forward to. It could be a nice lunch, a short walk, a favorite snack at 3 pm, or even a 20-minute scroll on TikTok guilt-free. Having little treats during the day breaks things up and makes the whole thing more manageable. It’s about working smarter, not just powering through and hoping for the best.

Dress the Part

No one’s saying you need to wear office clothes at home, but changing out of pajamas does make a difference. It signals to your brain that you’re in work mode, even if it’s just a clean t-shirt and joggers. Plus, if you’ve ever had to throw on a shirt at lightning speed for an unexpected video call, you’ll know it saves stress too.

Be Kind to Yourself

Some days will be super productive. Others, not so much. That’s totally normal. Working from home isn’t about being a machine. It’s about finding a way to get things done without burning out. So if your day goes sideways, don’t beat yourself up. Learn from it, tweak a few things, and try again tomorrow. Productivity isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress.

Working from home has loads of benefits, but it does take a bit of intention to make it work well. Whether you’re running your own business or just doing your job remotely, these small changes can make a big difference.
