This is how AMG set an incredible EV record.

Mercedes-AMG is set to shake up the already competitive, impressive, and rapidly innovating landscape of performance-oriented EVs, with manufacturers across the globe taking full advantage of electric power to make some of the most exciting performance cars when it comes to acceleration and immense torque figures. However, the new CONCEPT AMG GT XX from Mercedes-AMG is showcasing groundbreaking performance in a different way, having gone “around the world in eight days” when it set 25 total long-distance records by traveling 24,901 miles in less than eight days on the legendary Nardò test track.

The vehicles that participated in the test maintained a running speed of 186 mph for the 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7 seconds that the journey took, setting records, including one for the longest distance covered by an electric vehicle in 24 hours, a record that was broken fourteen times by the pair of vehicles. The feat required incredible innovations in the engineering and design of the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, which will make appearances in production vehicles using the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG.EA electric performance platform as soon as next year.

With three axial flux motors powering the vehicles with a direct-cooled battery, it was that very technology that allowed the CONCEPT AMG GT XX to withstand the intense trial of being driven at such high speeds for such a long time. In addition, integrated cooling, advanced aerodynamics which help support cooling, and a smart operating strategy contributed to the record run, as well.

Other captivating technology added to the futurism of the amazing achievement, including the use of an augmented reality racing helmet, ergonomic 3D seat pads, and biotechnology-based materials. The drag coefficient of the car was a scant 0.19, the wheels use carbon fiber elements to further enhance aerodynamics, a newly developed Alpitronic charging station provided the fast and effective charging needed for the run, and Michelin developed a new tire, the Pilot Sport 5 Energy, tailor-made to handle traveling the circumference of the Earth at 186 mph. With an incredible amount of painstaking effort and innovation, the CONCEPT AMG GT XX represents Mercedes-AMG’s ability to push performance EVs even further into the future.
