Don’t look now, but Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Rather than get mom the usual bouquet of flowers, why not get her the gift of horsepower instead? Specialty Auto Auction has held over 120 sales throughout the middle US since 1987. Their next event will take place this Saturday, May 10th in Greely, Colorado. That makes it the perfect time to surprise mom with that Corvette she’s always wanted.
Specialty Auto Auction’s Spring docket is a diverse mix of prewar hot rods, muscle cars, trucks, and late model cruisers. As we write this, we see 85 cars consigned including 15 Corvettes (or 17% of the docket).
The available Corvettes cover each of the first six generations of production. They run the gamut from a red 1957 fuelie to a silver 2011 Grand Sport coupe. The C3 era leads the way with 6 cars followed by the C1’s with 3 available. The fifth and sixth generations check in with 2 cars each while the second and fourth generations each have one example consigned.
Here are three Corvettes to keep an eye on this weekend in Colorado:
1958 Red / Red Convertible
Corvette received a light makeover in 1958. The body was widened and lengthened while quad headlights were added to the front fenders. Chevrolet also added a stylish louvered hood and twin chrome spears on the trunk for a more upscale appearance.
This 1958 Corvette hails from the Gene Lang Collection after a meticulous restoration courtesy of Jack Wallace’s Vintage Vettes. It wears Signet Red paint that’s complemented by a red interior. It’s powered by the 270hp variant of the 283 engine which is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Other features include white coves, a red hardtop, and wide white wall tires.
1965 Black / Black Fuelie Coupe
The 1965 Corvette model year marked the debut of 4-wheel disc brakes and the first big block engine. It’s also noted as the last year for the fuel-injected small block. Of the 23,562 Corvettes produced that year, this 1965 Sting Ray is one of just 771 Corvettes (3.2%) equipped with the fuel-injected 327/375 hp L84 engine. A 4-speed manual transmission was required whenever a “fuelie” engine was selected.
Its Tuxedo black paint is believed to be original and matches the coordinating black interior. Other features include knockoff wheels, black wall tires, and a teak steering wheel. According to the auction listing, the car “runs and drives great (and is) ready to drive and enjoy.”
1994 Competition Yellow / Black Convertible
Corvette production was motoring along in 1994 with 23,330 units produced that year. With the C5 waiting in the wings, changes were minor. The interior received some light styling tweaks as well as a passenger side airbag. Leather seats became standard, the convertible’s rear window was now made of glass, and the LT1 engine added sequential port fuel injection.
If you’re looking to add a stylish Corvette to your garage and not break the bank, here’s a great opportunity to do so at no reserve. This late C4 Corvette Convertible from the Gene Land collection is one of just 834 units painted Competition Yellow in 1994 – the 2nd lowest production color that year. The well-maintained Corvette features the 300hp LT1 engine backed by an automatic transmission. The 110,000-mile car includes a radar system, a DVD player with an upgraded sound system, plus new wheels and tires.
In addition to the three great Corvettes above, don’t miss out on these other Corvettes up for bid this weekend in Colorado.
