On the other end of the spectrum from the Insteroid concept and facelifted Ioniq 6, the wider Hyundai group is also showcasing two show cars from its flagship Genesis brand, aimed at expressing the latter’s “facets of exclusive sportiness and luxurious elegance.” To that end, the stunning Genesis X Gran Coupé and Convertible Concepts provide a fascinating look at the marque’s future direction.
Despite one of them using the same Gran Coupé name as BMW, these are no four-door concessions to modern-day practicality needs. Instead, you get two traditionally beautiful two-door shapes, both representing developments of previous Genesis X concepts – bringing them a little closer to the real world.
Based on the G90 luxury sedan, the X Gran Coupé and Convertible are wide and low, still featuring Genesis’ distinctive Two-Line headlights but with a broader and slimmer Crest Grille. The latter gets a unique mesh design with the same double lines, criss-crossing each other and forming a diamond pattern. The wide air intakes with a downturned centre inlet follows the theme set by the facelifted G70 and G80.
Along the side, the continued Two-Line illumination in the front fenders visually elongates the already long bonnet, while the low-slung rooflines emphasise the cars’ sleekness and overall length. On the Gran Coupé, you get a gentle C-pillar kink that accentuates the pronounced rear haunches; the lack of a B-pillar, meanwhile, ensures an uninterrupted daylight opening with all four windows wound down.
The Gran Convertible’s upswept window line leads into the buttresses aft of the rear seats and neatly demarcates the body and the soft top. Both cars get lengthened doors that aid entry and egress, especially for the rear passengers.
The elegant design continues at the rear, where you’ll find the Two-Line graphic repeated in the full-width taillights, plus a subtle ducktail spoiler, a flush bumper and twin rectangular exhausts. Aside from the body styles, the two cars differ in terms of colours – olive green for the Gran Coupé, wine-inspired burgundy for the Gran Convertible – and the intricate deep-dish wheels that highlight their widened track.
Inside, the latest Genesis X concepts ditch their wraparound cockpit-like dashboards for a G90-derived cabin, replete with a widescreen display panel, a pill-shaped climate control panel and a broad centre console topped by a rotary gear selector knob. Here, the show cars are differentiated by a hooded instrument display, a three-spoke steering wheel (with an aluminium bottom spoke) and some crystal switchgear.
The interior colour schemes of both cars carry over the theme of their respective exterior hues. The Gran Coupé gets olive green leather upholstery, olive wood trim and olive leaf motifs on the door cards and carpets, while the Gran Convertible’s rather lurid blue cabin is said to be inspired by Italian Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Both cars get plush-looking armchair-like seats with built-in seat belts and rear-facing displays and air vents.
Both cars are simply concepts at the moment, so there’s no word on what powers them. We should point out, however, that the G90 that underpins them is motivated by a 340 PS/530 Nm 3.5 litre turbocharged V6 paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with the long-wheelbase model gaining an additional 35 PS and 19 Nm of torque from an electric supercharger.
For now, Genesis has yet to indicate if it will put the X Gran Coupé and Convertible on sale. However, the cars’ apparent production readiness – both sport proper door mirrors and flush pop-out door handles – certainly raise that possibility. Would you like to see these cars in showrooms?
