Genesis Hints at G90 Coupe Production Based on Flagship Sedan Platform

Genesis Hints at G90 Coupe Production Based on Flagship Sedan Platform

Posted on April 18, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Genesis Hints at G90 Coupe Production Based on Flagship Sedan Platform

Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of the Genesis brand, has sparked excitement by hinting at the possible production of a G90 coupe model. Speaking at the New York Auto Show, Donckerwolke emphasized that recent concept models—the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible—are more than just design mockups; they are actual prototypes.

G90 Platform Makes Coupe Project More Feasible

Donckerwolke confirmed that these concept vehicles are built on the same platform as the flagship Genesis G90 sedan, highlighting the business case for their production. By utilizing the existing G90 platform, Genesis can significantly reduce development costs while maintaining design integrity and performance.

“After exploring electric coupe and convertible concepts, we realized the market isn’t fully ready,” said Donckerwolke. “So, we decided to develop a coupe using the existing G90 platform, without compromising on design or product competitiveness.”

Positive Outlook for Market Potential

The Genesis CCO expressed optimism about the potential market demand for a luxury coupe, stating, “We are very positive about this project and hope to share good news in the coming months. We are not giving up on it.”

If the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible reaches production in the near future (it is expected to be available in a limited batch in 2026) as the G90 Coupe, it could be powered by the 3.5 Twin Turbo V6 engine that thanks to the help of an electric supercharger currently makes 415 horsepower in the Sedan or the GV80 Coupe models.

Design Leadership Supports the Vision

SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design, echoed Donckerwolke’s sentiments. “When you talk about luxury brands, large coupes and convertibles become technological and emotional icons,” he explained. “We call Genesis an elegant brand—and coupes and convertibles express the ultimate in dynamic elegance.”

Production Not Official—But Signals Are Strong

While an official production decision for the Genesis G90 Coupe has yet to be confirmed, the comments from Genesis leadership suggest a strong internal push toward bringing this luxurious and stylish model to market.
