Genesis Confirms GV80 as Its First Hybrid, Mass Production to Begin in Ulsan by September 2026

Genesis, Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury brand, is shifting gears in its electrification strategy by introducing hybrid models—starting with the GV80 SUV. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, mass production of the Genesis GV80 Hybrid will begin in September 2026 at the Ulsan plant in South Korea.

GV80 Hybrid to Lead Hybrid Rollout

The GV80 Hybrid will be the first of three key hybrid models. It will be followed by the G80 Hybrid in December 2026 and the GV70 Hybrid in March 2027. These vehicles form the cornerstone of Genesis’ sales in major markets like the U.S., which accounts for nearly 30% of the brand’s total global sales.

In 2023, the GV70, GV80, and G80 collectively made up 78% of Genesis sales in the U.S., with the GV70 leading the pack.

Market-Driven Strategy to Counter EV Chasm

The change in direction follows a broader trend in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are responding to slower-than-expected EV adoption. Hyundai’s hybrid sales rose 35% in 2023, reaching over 509,000 units, while EV sales dropped 23% to 218,500 units.

Manfred Harrer, Genesis Vice President of Vehicle Development, acknowledged this reality:

“The EV chasm is a reality the entire auto industry faces. We can’t ignore the need for practical alternatives like hybrids and extended-range EVs (EREVs).”

Offering a Transitional Option for Consumers

Genesis’ pivot to hybrid technology reflects a pragmatic approach to electrification. By offering hybrids now, the company hopes to bridge the gap until consumers and infrastructure are more prepared for full electrification.
