Summary
Another of Ford’s historic nameplates to be revived for the modern era, the Ford Capri is a mid-sized electric coupé-SUV that went on sale in the UK in late 2024, with the first cars reaching customers just before Christmas.
The product of a collaboration with Volkswagen, the new Capri uses the same foundations as Volkswagen’s ID models. The Capri is essentially a Ford reworking of the Volkswagen ID.5 coupé-SUV, while it’s also closely related to the new Ford Explorer SUV (which is Ford’s version of the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV).
As with the larger Mustang Mach-E, Ford has received considerable publicity – much of it negative – by taking a historic sports car name and applying it to an electric SUV. But it’s also fair to say that using such well-known model names gives greater recognition than a random collection of letters and numbers that many other brands use.
The Capris has received positive reviews from the motoring media at its launch. Jordan Katsianis from Auto Express describes it as “a capable, refined and well-built EV” that just so happens “to sport a controversial name”. Given that it’s based on the same underpinnings as the Ford Explorer, Paul Horrell from Top Gear notes without surprise that it’s “much the same to drive”.
As of February 2025, the Ford Capri holds a New Car Expert Rating of A, with a score of 77%. It scores top marks for its low running costs and zero tailpipe emissions, as well as its impressive safety rating. However, its media review scores to date are only average, and it’s far too early to have any meaningful reliability data.

“The new Ford Capri is no sports car, nor even a retro reboot – rather a capable, refined and well-built EV that happens to sport a controversial name.”

“Ford has once again dipped into its back catalogue of legendary model names with this all-electric Capri, riffing on the original’s coupe credentials with a contemporary crossover twist that hasn’t gone down entirely well with traditionalists. Whatever your feelings on that there is no doubt Ford needed more EVs in its line-up, though. Think of the Capri as a slightly sportier alternative to the bigger Explorer and you’ll be on the right track.”

“The Ford Capri is a comfortable, practical electric coupe-SUV, marred only by a distracting name which sets false expectations.”

“It might not be as sporty as the old Capri but look past the name and this is a promisingly practical family car.”

“I really wanted to love the new Capri, but I just can’t help feeling that it’s missing the style ‘wow’ factor that I was hoping for – even though it does look like it’s going to be a great family car.”

“I don’t really have a problem with the Capri as an entity. It’s a perfectly serviceable family runabout that promises decent efficiency, good practicality and reasonable technology. But I take great offence in Ford’s disingenuous marketing.”

“Not a Capri but not a bad EV.”

“If you take away the renowned Capri name this is a workmanlike family SUV coupé: spacious, with a large boot and generous rear-seat space. Not at all shabby, then. Notwithstanding its VW roots, it’s the sort of car Ford used to make (without a battery, of course); affordable, with pedestrian roots, but a bit of attitude. In truth, the new EV Capri is a bit of a disappointment and therein lies a problem for Ford.”

“The Explorer’s close cousin is a little slinkier looking but more expensive and much the same to drive”

Independent crash test and safety ratings from Euro NCAP
Adult protection: 89%
Child protection: 86%
Vulnerable road users: 80%
Safety assist: 72%
The Ford Capri’s Euro NCAP safety rating is based on the Ford Explorer, which was tested in September 2024. Additional testing was conducted to ensure safety performance was as expected where the two vehicles varied, but most testing results are based on the Explorer’s assessment.
Independent economy and emissions ratings from Green NCAP
No eco rating
As of February 2025, the Ford Capri has not been assessed by Green NCAP.
The Green NCAP programme measures exhaust pollution (which is zero for an electric car) and energy efficiency. Electric cars are much more energy-efficient than combustion cars, so the Capri is likely to score very highly in Green NCAP testing whenever it ever takes place. Check back again soon.

The Ford Capri should be a relatively affordable car to own and run, according to five-year running cost data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our technical partner, Clear Vehicle Data.
Electrical efficiency (the EV equivalent of fuel economy for a petrol or diesel car) is excellent, which means battery range is very good. We don’t have insurance group ratings yet, but service costs are generally good over the first five years.
