First Spy Photos of Hyundai IONIQ 2 Prototype Emerge in South Korea

Posted on July 21, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on First Spy Photos of Hyundai IONIQ 2 Prototype Emerge in South Korea

The Hyundai IONIQ 2 has been spotted for the first time, with spy photos revealing a camouflaged prototype parked in a South Korean parking lot. Captured by our colleagues at ShortsCar, these exclusive images show the upcoming electric crossover sporting a sleek coupe-like silhouette and the signature pixelated lighting elements that define the IONIQ range.

Internally Codenamed “BJ1” – Hyundai’s Entry-Level E-GMP EV

According to Autocar, the IONIQ 2 is internally known as “BJ1” and is being developed as Hyundai’s most affordable IONIQ model yet, built on the brand’s advanced E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). This marks the first time an IONIQ model will not carry an “E” in its internal codename, unlike the rest of the IONIQ lineup: the IONIQ 5 is “NE,” the IONIQ 6 is “CE,” and the IONIQ 9 is “ME.”

Positioned Between Hyundai Inster and Kona Electric

Sized similarly to the combustion-powered Hyundai Bayon, the IONIQ 2 will sit between the Hyundai Inster and Kona Electric in terms of pricing and footprint. This positioning puts it head-to-head with small electric SUVs like the Renault 4 and Volvo EX30, offering buyers an urban-friendly EV with a premium design flair.

Developed alongside Kia’s upcoming EV2, the IONIQ 2 is expected to share its underpinnings, further helping Hyundai keep costs competitive for the European market.

Range, Battery Options, and Performance

While final specs haven’t been confirmed, reports indicate the IONIQ 2 will likely offer the same powertrain options as the Kia EV3, including:

  • 58.3kWh battery – up to 267 miles (430 km) of range
  • 81.4kWh battery – up to 372 miles (599 km) of range
  • Single front-mounted electric motor producing 201 bhp and 209 lb-ft (283 Nm) of torque

These figures would make the IONIQ 2 one of the longest-range and most capable compact EVs in its class.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the IONIQ 2 is expected to debut Hyundai’s latest cabin innovations, including:

  • A driver-centric adaptive infotainment system with ambient lighting and sound profiles that adjust based on driving mode
  • A wide digital display integrating both the instrument cluster and infotainment functions, stretching across half the dashboard
  • A clean, minimalist interior design similar to what’s planned for the Kia EV2

Pricing and Launch Timeline

Hyundai is targeting a starting price of around €30,000 (£25,000), positioning the IONIQ 2 as one of Europe’s most affordable electric crossovers. According to Hyundai’s European CEO Xavier Martinet, the official reveal will take place within the next few months, with a market launch expected in Q3 2026. First customer deliveries could begin as early as July 2026, just after Kia’s EV2 hits showrooms.

A New Affordable EV for Europe

With its stylish coupe-inspired design, pixel lighting signature, competitive range, and accessible pricing, the Hyundai IONIQ 2 is shaping up to be a major contender in the compact electric vehicle segment. Expect more sightings of camouflaged prototypes as Hyundai gears up for its global debut later this year.
