Ferrari reconsiders electric car plans as demand falls short – report

Ferrari reconsiders electric car plans as demand falls short – report

Posted on June 19, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Ferrari reconsiders electric car plans as demand falls short – report

Ferrari has locked in its first, limited-production electric vehicle, but plans for a second, higher-volume model have been put on hold as demand for performance EVs tapers.

Ferrari has pushed plans for a second all-electric model back, from a planned 2026 introduction to a new 2028 launch date.

A report published by Reuters reveals a lack of demand for the model, citing unnamed company insiders.

Ferrari’s first electric vehicle is set to be revealed in October 2025, following an increasing number of hybrid models that have joined the range since the LaFerrari of 2013, and the plug-in hybrid SF90 Stradale, launched in 2019.

The first Ferrari EV, spied testing in heavy camouflage, wearing a crossover-SUV body adapted from the sheet metal of a Maserati Levante, has been described by Emanual Carando – the brand’s head of marketing – as “a true Ferrari”.

But new reports from within Ferrari suggest that the demand for a second electric vehicle may not be strong enough to continue with its planned 2026 introduction.

While details of the second electric Ferrari model are yet to be confirmed, it is likely to adhere more closely to Ferrari’s supercar heritage, rather than taking the form of another SUV-style vehicle.

Speaking with Reuters, a company insider suggested that the ongoing demand for an electric sports car was almost non-existent.

Ferrari joins other European brands in delaying or reducing the number of planned electric vehicles in recent times.

Plans for the first all-electric Lamborghini model have been pushed back from a 2028 introduction to a 2029 date, while Porsche has focused on higher-volume segments with the Taycan and Macan, rather than with a performance coupe.

Plans for Ferrari’s first EV remain on track for a 2025 reveal and 2026 production.

The second model, which insiders say needs to reach a production target of 5000 to 6000 units over a five-year lifespan, already looks to have fallen short of targets – with Ferrari often pre-selling new models to existing clients, providing a benchmark for potential demand.

Further clarity on the brand’s electric vehicle plans may come at the October reveal of the premiere EV model, with a long-term business plan to be announced to investors at the same time.
