Electric Porsche 718 Cayman spied testing at the Nurburgring

Electric Porsche 718 Cayman spied testing at the Nurburgring

Posted on May 11, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Electric Porsche 718 Cayman spied testing at the Nurburgring

The first sighting of the all-electric sports coupe could hint at a September reveal at the IAA in Munich.

The upcoming all-electric version of the Porsche 718 Cayman coupe has been spotted for the first time testing on the Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

A partner to the electrified Boxster convertible, which has been spotted numerous times during cold-weather testing, the electric Cayman is seen wearing light camouflage, hinting that the compact sports cars could be set for reveal in the coming months.

One option may be the 2025 IAA Mobility Motor Show, which is scheduled for September 9-14 in Munich, Germany. Porsche is already a confirmed exhibitor.

Further, Porsche unveiled the Cayman-esque electric Mission R concept racer at the 2021 IAA show, so using the 2025 event to bookend the journey from concept to reality for the two-door sports platform could be a good story for the German brand.

While details of the electrified 718 platform are yet to be confirmed, the expectation is that the Boxster and Cayman will use a twin motor configuration and 800-volt electric architecture, hinting at a potential all-wheel-drive variant in the line-up.

The electric Porsche Macan uses the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform, which was co-developed with Audi and Volkswagen. It has been previously reported that the electric 718 (codenamed 983) will likely use a variation of this.

The performance-oriented drivetrain may even power sports cars that wear an Audi or Volkswagen badge, in a similar relationship to the existing Porsche Macan and Audi e-tron GT mechanical siblings.

The Cayman photographed testing features light disguise around its head and tail lamps, but styling that aligns both with the new Macan (headlamps), updated 911 (front vanes) and Mission R concept racer can all be seen.

Aerodynamic wheel designs and the central rear charging port help identify the electric powertrain beneath the sports coupe.

While the performance credentials of the electric Cayman are yet to be communicated by Porsche, the EV has some impressive benchmarks to aim for, particularly at the Nurburgring.

German magazine Sport Auto recorded a 7min 47sec lap time of the Nordschleife circuit in a Porsche 718 Cayman S when the car was launched in 2016. Significantly bettering this, Porsche officially recorded a 7min 04sec lap time in the high-performance 718 Cayman GT4 RS in 2022.
