BMW has released the first teaser images of the battery-powered iM3 super sedan, due to be released in 2028.
Rumoured to produce more than 746kW (1000hp) from a quad-motor battery-electric powertrain, the camouflaged iM3 prototype was revealed with near-production bodywork
It will be based on the all-new BMW i3 electric sedan, which itself will be underpinned by BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse dedicated electric-car platform.

However, alongside its full-blown M EV, BMW will continue to sell the combustion-powered M3, the next generation of which will continue to be powered by the Bavarian brand’s trademark twin-turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine when it also debuts around 2028.
While the next-gen combustion-powered M3 will reportedly enter production in July 2028, following the launch of the new G50-series 3 Series in November 2026 (the same month the all-new i3 is expected to enter production), the iM3 should follow it on sale in 2028, giving mid-sized BMW sports sedan the choice of petrol and electric powertrains.
The first Neue Klass platform-based model will be the 2025 BMW iX3, followed by the 2026 3 Series.
The iM3 was previewed by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept and has been spied wearing a widened i4 body, but it’s believed the body of this camouflaged prototype is close to production-spec.
As you can see from these low-resolution teasers shared by BMW, the iM3 will feature pumped-out wheel-arches, aggressive front and rear bumpers, and pop-out door-handles.
Under its muscular bodywork, the iM3 is expected to incorporate an electric motor at each wheel, providing for all-wheel drive as standard and making it the most powerful BMW M-car ever, with about double the power output of the existing G80-series M3 Competition (375kW/650Nm).
The next-gen G84-series M3, meantime, will pack a more powerful yet cleaner, Euro 7 emissions-compliant version of the current model’s S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six.
