I wanted to share the frustrating situation I’m dealing with, hoping some of you might have advice on how to move forward. I’m happy to provide any extra details if needed. Thanks in advance!
For the past few weeks, I’ve been experiencing a recurring issue with the digital instrument panel of my Volvo V90 B4 (2021), a problem that directly impacts driving safety (see attached photos). After a quick online search, I realized that this isn’t an isolated case. Turns out it’s actually a well-documented issue affecting multiple Volvo models from 2015 onwards, and I’ve found a few threads here discussing it.
I reached out to Volvo’s Customer Service to request full coverage for the repair or a part replacement, since my car is still “relatively” new and the dashboard screen is not a wear-and-tear component (it shouldn’t fail under normal circumstances during the car’s lifetime). They asked me to visit a dealership for an official diagnostic so they could evaluate whether they’d contribute to the repair costs. The dealership charged me nearly €200 just to confirm the obvious diagnostic that I had already shared with them right from the start: the driver display was faulty. A few days later I received a repair quote for over €1700 along with a response from Volvo Cars stating that, as an “exceptional commercial gesture” (and without admitting any responsibility), they’d cover 30% of the cost as my car was already out of warranty
Honestly, I’m really disappointed. I always considered Volvo a premium brand and a benchmark for quality, reliability, safety and customer service, but this experience is proving otherwise. Even without an active warranty, I believe Volvo has an ethical obligation to take responsibility in cases like this. Not to mention, there are also legal protections against manufacturing defects and design flaws.
So I’m taking legal action…
In the meantime, I would like to have a plan B in case the problem reoccurs (it hasn’t happened in the last five days, but I’m not confident this will last…). I’ve seen that some of you have fixed it yourselves, and I’d love to give it a shot—but I’ll need some guidance and advice…
- option A is to find an identical second-hand instrument cluster with lower milleage and swap it
- option B is to get a “similar” second-hand cluster but swap only the TFT screen within to avoid compatibility/milleage issues
- option C, may fovourite, is to buy a brand new TFT screen and replace just this component
My questions:
- does anyone who has done this repair know the exact reference for the TFT screen? my guess is SHARP LQ123B5RW01 (9060037663) but I’m not sure this reference is the same accross all models
- secondly, any tips on dismantling the cluster from the car and then disassembling it? I’ve found some guides with step-by-step instructions, but I’m particularly worried about damaging the wooden trims…
Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance and have a great weekend!
Cheers,
Miguel
