Introduction
The Honda CR-V helped create the modern compact SUV class and is a benchmark in the segment. The CR-V has a long record of success, regularly being among the best-selling vehicles and racking up numerous awards, including multiple Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards over the years. The Honda CR-V arrived in America way back in 1997, just one year after the debut of its longtime rival, the Toyota RAV4. The 2022 Honda CR-V was the last year of the fifth generation that was introduced in 2017. That generation also marked the arrival of the Honda CR-V Hybrid, which debuted in 2020.

The 2022 Honda CR-V wowed us as one of the best compact SUVs you could buy. It impressed us with its powertrain, spaciousness, comfort, and excellent feature set. Honda was among the first automakers to include a wide range of active safety features on its cars, and that includes the 2022 Honda CR-V. Every model came standard with the Honda Sensing suite that bundles adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and more.
The 2022 Honda CR-V was available in several main trims: LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. All are powered by a 1.5-liter turbo engine that we found potent and fuel-efficient. CR-V Hybrid models were available in EX Sport, EX-L Sport, and Touring Sport trims and use a gas-electric powertrain, which produces even more power and better fuel economy — up to 38 mpg combined. Front-wheel drive (FWD) was standard in the gas models, and all-wheel drive (AWD) was optional in those and standard in the hybrids.
While even a base LX Honda CR-V brings a lot of vehicle for the money, we’d step up at least one trim to the EX to get features like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, moonroof, and a 7-inch touchscreen. If you want amenities like leather upholstery and a power tailgate, go for the EX-L, while Touring trims bring treats like navigation, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power tailgate, LED headlights, and premium audio.
