Clicking / Ticking Noise (upper dashboard / HUD) | SwedeSpeed

I have a 2022 XC90. I began to notice some clicking/ticking noise near HUD about 15 months ago. About 13months ago I was about to bring my car in for service so I thought I would catch the moment when the clicking sound is audible, record it, and make an appointment to get service and also ask them to look into this. Unfortunately, they saw my video (I uploaded to my personal google drive) but it didn’t help much because when I brought my car in, there was no clicking sound at all.
*What I was speaking in the video in Chinese was I hope the Volvo technician understand what type of sound he should be trying to pick up and when”
** I can’t add a link to this post maybe because im new

Quick spoiler alert before I continue to the story, I still hear the clicking sound almost everyday.

So about the last year or so, I kept trying to find the perfect opportunity to take my car in and show them what’s going on. Meanwhile, I get more familiar with this sound especially the timing.

  • It happens about 8/10 days. Usually in the afternoon and evening. Almost never happens like early morning or midnight.
  • When it’s super hot like noon (about 32-38 degree C here), it’s quiet. But as it cools down, the noise will starting to come out.
  • It peaks at around 3:30pm~7:30pm, after that, the sound is still there but I have a feeling the noise is “dying”

I never look inside the HUD unit or whatever so I don’t really know what’s going on there, but I suspect, it’s after something has expanded tremendously and when it starts to cool down and start compressing, that’s when the noise is audible. But if it fully compressed down to like midnight temperature then the noise is gone.

So I’ve taken my car to dealer 3 times recently for noise problem. All in the afternoon when noise is happening. All 3 times I had a Volvo tech go out on a drive with me. So what they’ve done so far

  1. Opened up the HUD and put some tape or cushion in it. Noise disappeared initially but came back up again
  2. Sprayed some lub at the rubber around windshield. Noise didn’t even go away initially, perhaps we both thought it was slightly quieter due to placebo effect
  3. They didn’t do anything today. Came up with a plan ask me to bring my car in next week. They gonna give me a loaner to drive around. Said they will take the HUD apart and try multiple things. Might take 2 or 3 days.

I’m actually concerned. I dont know if when I bring my car in, usually in the morning, will there be the noise happening. Even if there was, after they take the HUD apart and tried a few things, typically the noise will be gone but just initially. Then how will they manage to continue after that or just tell me my car is ready and 2 or 3 days later it’s starting to make the clicking sound again and back at square 1.

Don’t know where this is going but hopefully I can get this solved and post more information later to this thread.
