Cap hpi overhauls mileage checks for dealersCap hpi has overhauled its National Mileage Register (NMR) investigation process to provide a faster service to dealers.

The service provides a detailed investigation when an HPI Check has identified a potential vehicle mileage issue. An NMR investigation uses data from over 20 industry sources to confirm a vehicle’s mileage history.

Thanks to new investments in data and technology, a certificate is delivered instantly for cases without discrepancies.

When an issue is identified, dealers are immediately informed that an investigation is underway. The team handling these investigations has been expanded to 15 operatives.

John Dennis, UK sales director at cap hpi, said: “We have undertaken a root-and-branch review of how we deliver NMR investigations.

“The new approach is faster and more reliable than the previous process. It also gives users clearer data, helping them evaluate and manage risk.

“The new process is designed to help dealers save both time and money through increased efficiency.

“The enhanced data references over 500 million records from multiple industry sources, ensuring a rigorous investigation process.”

The HPI Check helps dealers comply with the law by preventing the sale of clocked vehicles. The NMR investigation service is an important tool in helping dealers meet these obligations.

Developed in partnership with Trading Standards, the new NMR investigation service compares the vehicle’s current mileage reading against the National Mileage Register database.

It verifies that the recorded mileage reflects the true distance travelled based on the data held for that vehicle.

Cap hpi said that Trading Standards had reviewed the service and confirmed that, when used correctly in conjunction with a dealer’s own due diligence, it provides a viable defence should any offence concerning a vehicle’s mileage be raised.

Trading Standards advises that, alongside the mileage confirmation provided by cap hpi, dealers should obtain a signed mileage declaration from the current owner, conduct a physical inspection of the vehicle to ensure its condition aligns with the recorded mileage, and review its MOT and service history. These actions and keeping records of all checks undertaken demonstrate that dealers are taking reasonable steps to verify a vehicle’s mileage.

“The NMR Check and Investigation Service are designed to protect car buyers from the increasing spectre of clocking and mileage fraud.

“It combines vehicle mileage from sources such as the DVLA, V5 documents, insurance claims data and vehicle leasing companies.”
