Canberra opens largest ‘mixed-use’ public electric car charger

Allowing flexible charging depending on user needs, Canberra’s newest electric vehicle charger offers a choice of plugs and charger speeds.

The Canberra suburb of Turner is the location of a new ‘mixed-use’ electric vehicle charger, provided by energy retailer ActewAGL.

Australian electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are offered with three types of charge ports, and the new mixed-use charger caters to all three.

Offering three CCS2 DC fast-charge plugs, one CHAdeMo DC fast-charge plug and four Type 2 AC ‘slow charge’ outlets, the new station allows up to 75kW CCS2 and 62.5kW CHAdeMo DC charging for compatible vehicles, or up to 22kW AC via its Type 2 outlets.

ActewAGL claims the new charger is configured to allow it to replenish the charge in any one of the ACT’s 11,000 electric vehicles.

The charger’s location at 34 Watson Street, near Haig Park, was chosen for its proximity to the Canberra CBD, Australian National University, Braddon, and the Elouera St light rail stop.

The multi-speed charger system is designed to better match the needs of users who may not be looking for an immediate fill.

“We know drivers often face the pressure of moving their vehicle the moment charging finishes, especially with fast chargers,” Rachael Turner, the general manager of ActewAGL, said in a media statement.

“By providing a range of charging speeds, we’re easing this stress and giving drivers the flexibility to choose a charging speed that matches their plans.”

ActewAGL expects visitors to the Turner Parklands and nearby apartment dwellers to utilise the AC chargers, while interstate travellers in search of a fast top-up are expected to use the higher-rate DC connectors.

In April, the BYD Sealion 7 surpassed Tesla Model Y to become Australia’s new best-selling electric car for the month.

The charger site is described as the ACT’s largest mixed-use EV charge hub, and brings the number of charge ports operated by ActewAGL to 40, across 12 locations.

Funding for the hub was provided by the Public EV Charging Infrastructure fund, to which the ACT government has committed at least $1.5 million, which as of 2024 had plans to roll out 39 additional chargers across the ACT during 2024 and 2025.

User-provided info on the Turner charge site, listed on PlugShare, shows a price of $0.58 per kWh for the 75kW CCS2 chargers and 62.5kW CHAdeMO plug, or $0.50 per kWh when using the 22kW AC Type 2 connectors.
