BYD Sealion 6 gets new long-range flagship

That was fast.

Just weeks after announcing an Extended Range version of its Sealion 6 mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV, BYD has confirmed another addition to its lineup.

The BYD Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range takes the new, longer-range battery and combines it with all-wheel drive and the top-spec trim level to create a new flagship variant for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV rival.

This means you can now get the Standard Range 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery in Essential, Dynamic and Premium trims, plus the 26.6kWh Extended Range LFP battery in the Dynamic and Premium.

Unusually, the Extended Range version of the Premium is priced identically to the Standard Range version at $52,990before on-road costs. That’s despite both having all-wheel drive and the same level of standard equipment.

The larger battery sees electric-only range boosted from 81km to 128km on the NEDC cycle, just 12km behind the less powerful Dynamic Extended Range.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is 1.1L/100km based on a battery state of charge between 20 and 100 per cent, up from 0.8L/100km in the Dynamic Extended Range.

The new range-topper mates the 26.6kWh battery with 150kW/300Nm front and 120kW/250Nm rear electric motors and a 96kW/220Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine.
