Bringing The Heat: Clean Culture Japan 2024

Bringing The Heat: Clean Culture Japan 2024

After a successful first event last year, Clean Culture Japan recently returned for its second instalment.

Building on its foundations while staying true to the Clean Culture event formula born in the USA – Jun Takahashi of Hardcore Tokyo and his team created a follow-up that was bigger and better, even including a live drift element.

While Clean Culture Japan 2023 was held in May, 2024’s edition played out in the sweltering late-summer heat. In the four years I’ve lived in Japan, I’ve noticed the summers getting fiercer and longer. My Anglo-Czech blood still struggles with the heat, regardless of having previously resided in Australia for over a decade.

Despite the conditions, the turnout at Longwood Station in Chiba was impressive – double that of year one.

I arrived around 3:00pm – after the drift demo, unfortunately – just as the heat began to weigh down the crowd. Fortunately, Longwood Station is a fantastic venue with several large, air-conditioned halls perfect for escaping the sun and grabbing refreshments.

This was right around when the sound-off was in full swing at the main stage, with Honda Civics, Nissan Skylines, and even an Aston Martin competing for the loudest 2-step/ limiter bash honours.

While the crowds were entertained, I went and checked out some cars.

I spotted a few vehicles from Web Option’s Wangan Base Yokohama show held the night before. It was great to see them in a new light, especially these two with their dazzling orange paint jobs.

As expected, the selection was eclectic, featuring super-clean cars with flawless fitment.

Like a Daft Punk album, Clean Culture Japan was all killer, no filler. Each of the 350+ cars on show was meticulously presented – except for a half-finished Mazda Eunos Roadster (Miata/MX-5) sporting an oversized GT wing and a roof box. At least it provided some entertainment!

Speaking of entertaining, Souki-san showcased three of his creations. While his Nissan Leopard and Skyline now have new owners, after five years of work on this Y30 Gloria, I think he’ll be enjoying it for a little longer.

Clean Culture Japan truly has it all: stunning cars, a great location, sound-offs, and now, live drift action.

On the subject of drifting, who wants to see a feature on the Rocket Bunny Racing Formula Drift R32?

Huge thanks to Jun and the Hardcore Tokyo team for an unforgettable show. See you all next year!
