So, we started to winch it on the trailer and the rear wheels are locked up (I did put the car in neutral). We tried to get the parking brake to release by following the instructions on the Volvo website with no luck. Well the instructions state to start the car to release the brake, well the car won’t start so it will not release the parking brake which makes no sense what so ever (my Audi S8 will release with key on). And the manual also states that it may not release if there is low voltage. Thankfully the car was parked on gravel so we got on and had to use a jack under the rear differential to roll it off the trailer.
I charged the batteries at home, the main would charge but it was reading 11.5 volts after it read 100% charged. So I replaced with a new AGM battery. Same problems, brake won’t release, no green light on the auto button next to the brake, and still it will turn over just fine and not fire up.
Well, I am obviously looking for suggestions on how to fix these to problems. I did a lot of google searching (and searched this forum) and got no answers to these issues before I decided to post here. With car “on” (wait 5 seconds in start mode) there are no lights on the dash related to “check engine” or anything like that. It only message is “Volvo On Call Service required”. I ran code check with a Foxwell NT510 Pro and nothing came up. So I am stumped. The only status is that the oil level is full.
I consider myself a DYI’er but if the car shows no problems, and there are two major problems I don’t no where to start.
Diagnose no start ideas:
- Fuel pump or relay: Where is the schrader valve to hookup a fuel pressure tester? Is there a relay for it.
- Check for spark: How to do it? Pull a coil pack and check for voltage while turning over the engine?
- Compression check: Even if was down a cylinder is still should start, granted it would not run very well and should go into limp mode
- Inertia Switch: Both wheels on the passenger side are curbed pretty bad from what it looks to be a single event. Thought that maybe the full pump was shutoff, then I read that that will only happen if the airbags go off, not the case here.
Diagnose Electric Brake that will not disengage:
- The red Park light is on the dash so it the car knows that it is working. The auto switch appears to be dead so I don’t know if that makes any difference. The only thing that I can think of is to unhook it the and try the 9 volt trick.
Starting to wonder I should have done even more research on this car or late model Volvo’s in general before I bought this car. They do appear to be not very user friendly when it comes to the car’s ECU relaying a problem via a light on the dash.
I guess I am to old school to own a car like this, maybe they were designed to be sold to people with deep pockets, time will tell. Funny thing is, I have been to Gothenburg about 10 times in the 90’s on business, used to rent Volvo’s all the time. Actually, I don’t think you rent any else unless it was Saab.
