BMW Sends Off The 8-Series In E31 Colors And All The M Branding It Could Find

  • BMW unveiled a special G15 8-Series that’s limited to 500 units worldwide.
  • Based on M850i xDrive Gran Coupe with 523 hp twin-turbocharged V8.
  • The M Heritage Edition sports classic E31 colors and full-spec equipment.

The G15 generation of the BMW 8-Series is nearing the end of its run, having been on the road since 2018. But before it bows out, Munich is sending it off with a limited-edition model that’s among the most distinctive yet, excluding the full-blown M8.

The 2026 M850i Edition M Heritage is as a 500-unit limited run equipped with a full-featured package and finished in a nostalgic color palette drawn from the original E31 8 Series. As such, it looks very much like a farewell to the brand’s flagship grand tourer.

The special edition debuted at Pebble Beach, where it was showcased next to the gorgeous E31. Unlike the two-door coupe from the ’90s, the Edition M Heritage is based on the more practical M850i xDrive Gran Coupe.

Classic Colors, Modern Package

One of the key elements of this special edition is its paintwork. BMW has brought back five classic shades from the original E31 catalog: Bright Red, Mauritius Blue metallic, Cosmos Black metallic, Oxford Green metallic, and Daytona Violet metallic. These heritage colors come included in the price, alongside a number of features that are typically optional.

The nostalgic colors are combined with an M carbon roof with tri-color stripes, and a set of 20-inch alloy wheels with a bi-color Orbit Grey finish. The special edition also has the M Sport Professional package which adds dark accents, black calipers, and dark-tinted headlights.

Alcantara and Carbon Inside

The interior is bathed in Alcantara, including the dashboard, door cards, and headliner. The M Sport seats are upholstered in Black Full Merino leather and Alcantara with a diamond-shaped pattern and non-illuminated M badges on the headrests.

There are more heritage-inspired touches across the interior, including tri-color stitching, Edition-specific M850i lettering on the cupholder and door sills, and a numbered plaque on the center console. The matte carbon fiber trim ties it all together. Standard equipment includes just about everything in the catalog, from the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System to the Driving Assistance Professional Package.

As with the standard M850i, the special edition is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 generating 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 533 lb-ft (723 Nm) of torque. This is the most powerful version of the 8-Series setting aside the full-blown M8 and M8 Competition. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, it can sprint from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 3.9 seconds.

Pricing and Availability

The 2026 M850i Edition M Heritage is available to order with a starting price of $130,400, excluding a $1,175 destination and handling fee. That makes it $21,000 pricier than the standard M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, though the equipment and exclusive details likely exceed the cost difference.

BMW plans to build only 500 units of the special edition, with distribution limited to select markets, including the US. Production is set to begin in November and deliveries are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026.
