Beijing Hyundai ELEXIO Beats Tesla Model Y Long Range in China with 722 km Range

Posted on July 16, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Beijing Hyundai ELEXIO Beats Tesla Model Y Long Range in China with 722 km Range

Beijing Hyundai’s all-new ELEXIO SUV has achieved a CLTC range of up to 722 km, 3 km more than the latest Tesla Model Y Long Range (which claims 719 km) based on China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle.

ELEXIO: The First Pure Electric SUV on Hyundai’s China-Specific EV Platform

As Beijing Hyundai’s first all-electric SUV built on a dedicated EV platform, the ELEXIO introduces at least five driving range configurations based on two battery options — 64.2 kWh and 88.1 kWh both are LFP and are made by BYD. Depending on the configuration, users can expect a CLTC-certified range from 518 km for the 64.2 kWh battery to 722 km for the 88.1 kWh battery.

This makes the ELEXIO the longest-range joint venture EV in its segment — even surpassing the Tesla Model Y Long Range by 3 kilometers.

In terms of power:

  • RWD variant: 160 kW electric motor
  • AWD variant: Dual motors — 160 kW front + 73 kW rear

Futuristic Design and Premium Build

The front design features a clean, enclosed grille, accented by a through-type DRL light bar and quad-beam LED headlights, giving the ELEXIO a tech-forward aesthetic. Other exterior highlights include:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Flush hidden door handles
  • Seamless rear LED light strip

Size-wise, the ELEXIO is expected to compete in the compact electric SUV segment, with dimensions of 4615 x 1875 x 1676 mm and a 2750 mm wheelbase.

Intelligent Cabin with Smart Driving Features

Inside, the ELEXIO prioritizes simplicity and user-centered technology. Key interior features include:

  • Massive 27-inch floating display
  • Head-up display (HUD)
  • Flat-bottomed two-tone steering wheel
  • Paddle-based 4-level regenerative braking and one-pedal driving mode

It comes in a 5-seat configuration and includes:

  • 29 storage areas
  • Sliding privacy box
  • Two-way expandable cup holders
  • 506-liter trunk capacity
  • BOSE premium sound
  • Wireless phone charging

Can the ELEXIO Outshine Tesla in China?

Tesla has long dominated the high-end electric SUV segment in China, but Hyundai’s ELEXIO beating the Model Y’s range by 3 km sends a clear message: joint venture brands are stepping up. With competitive specs and a strong feature set, the ELEXIO could become a cost-effective alternative to Tesla for buyers who prioritize range and practicality in a daily-use EV.

Launch Date and Market Positioning

The Beijing Hyundai ELEXIO is expected to launch officially in Q3 2025, with more pricing and variant details coming soon. Positioned alongside rivals like the Kia EV5, SAIC Volkswagen ID.4 X, and Toyota bZ3X, the ELEXIO may finally help Hyundai gain ground in the competitive new energy segment.
