Is DIESEL Oil Actually WORSE for Gas Engines? Here’s The Truth About What You Shouldn’t Be Running In Your Engine
If diesel oil is bad for gasoline engines, I’m guilty of that one. I haven’t done it in years, but back when engine oil dropped the high zinc load, everyone was scrambling for oil that still had some in it. Back then, that meant you were using Delo or one of the other diesel oils. I used Delo in several gasoline engines, until Lucas came out with the TBZinc oil additive, and other oil companies started making hot rod oils. These hot rod oils had zinc and other additives that are designed specifically for older bearing tolerances, flat tappet camshafts, relatively low or irregular use, etc.
Do you still use diesel oil in your hot rod engine? Here’s why this isn’t a good idea. Watch the Motor Oil Geek video below.
Video Description:
Diesel oils contain more Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate (AKA Zinc or ZDDP) than Gasoline engine oils, but does that mean Diesel oils provide better anti-wear protection than Gasoline engine oils? Diesel oils also contain higher levels of detergent and dispersant additives than Gasoline oils. Some people think that these higher levels of additives make Diesel oils BETTER than Gasoline engine oils, even for Gasoline engines. Let’s see what the science says!
