If you are a motorsports fan of any kind, you know the name Mario Andretti. The fact that he is a Formula One champion, Indy Car Champion, Team Owner and has too many wins to his name to count, would be enough to want to check out the Lotus 79 that is being featured in the video below, after all it’s the car that Mario drove to his first F1 Championship. But the car itself is truly something special. This is one of the first cars in F1 history to really embrace and exploit aerodynamics and is often thought of as the car that started F1 innovation. After the announcement that Mario Andretti will be at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, there is no better time than to celebrate his championship-winning car in the Lotus 79. Following our ‘Innovators’ category in our F1 75 celebrations at this year’s event, the Lotus 79 was one of the most important cars in aerodynamics in Formula 1. It was the first car that utilised ‘ground effect’ aerodynamics, which developed incredible grip and traction.
We spoke to the Team Manager of Classic Team Lotus, Chris Dinnage, who has the great claim of driving more Lotus cars than anyone else in history.
