Australia’s most recalled vehicles in 2024

Posted on January 1, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Australia’s most recalled vehicles in 2024

Recalls are a fact of life, and they can run the gamut from something as simple as an incorrect label being fitted to something as scary as a potential fire risk.

A total of 1,088,411 vehicles were recalled in Australia in 2024, with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts publishing 197 separate recall notices across 42 brands.

While Isuzu Ute Australia issued just two recall notices, combined they affected 186,014 vehicles.

One of these two impacted 149,048 examples of the D-Max ute and MU-X SUV, effectively every example of the current-generation models which were affected by a software issue which could cause a reduction in engine power.

This alone exceeded any other brand’s total.

Hyundai had a huge 113,525 vehicles recalled in just one notice, accounting for more than 90 per cent of its total.

BMW also had to recall more than 63,000 vehicles due to the deadly Takata airbag fault rearing its ugly head.

While Isuzu Ute Australia recalled the most individual vehicles, Kia issued the most recall notices with 21 during the course of 2024.

That wasn’t as many as Mercedes-Benz issued in 2023, however, when the German brand issued 33 recall notices out of a total of 166 across all brands.

On one day in October, 10 separate recall notices – impacting 104,101 Kia vehicles – were issued due to a common fault which could lead to a fire.

It’s worth noting that sometimes multiple models can be lumped into a single recall notice, while at other times these may be separated into different recall notices.

While it could’ve been Toyota at the top, 19 of the recall notices attached to the Japanese giant involved HiAces which had been fitted with a non-compliant built-in hoist for lifting a wheelchair and a wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint system which was installed by a third party.

It’s worth noting the absence of a recall notice doesn’t necessarily mean the absence of an issue. Some companies may choose to be more proactive by issuing a recall sooner rather than later.
