AdBlue Removal for Diesel Engines: Should you do it?

AdBlue Removal for Diesel Engines: Should you do it?

Posted on July 22, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on AdBlue Removal for Diesel Engines: Should you do it?

What is AdBlue?

If you drive a modern-day diesel vehicle, you have probably heard of AdBlue. AdBlue is a fluid that is made from a mix of urea and deionized water. It is used to convert nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. It is used in the majority of diesel engines, and it is used to reduce the number of harmful emissions that the vehicle releases and helps it to meet the environmental standards. Some people decide that they no longer want/need the AdBlue system, and this is where AdBlue removal comes in.

What is AdBlue Removal and how is it done?

AdBlue removal is a service which is offered by specialist engineers. The process involves disabling the vehicle’s SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction). This makes it so that the vehicle no longer requires AdBlue to run. This is done by using software modifications that makes the vehicle’s computer think the system is functioning as it should when it actually isn’t. this therefore allows the vehicle to run without the need for AdBlue and this is a desirable service for a lot of people. This is safe for the engine and doesn’t pose threat if done correctly.

Benefits of AdBlue Removal:

1. Cost Savings – As many diesel drivers may know, AdBlue itself isn’t overly expensive, however, over time the costs can add up. For high mileage and fleet vehicles, they will need a lot more AdBlue to operate and so this can make costs higher. For HGV companies who have a lot of vehicles they may choose AdBlue removal as their option as they can save a lot of money.

2. Reduced maintenance costs – Faults in the AdBlue system can be quite common and be expensive to fix. There are many faults that can occur from the AdBlue system. Some include blocked injectors and faulty sensors. If faults occur in these then the cost to repair can be high. Therefore, AdBlue removal is a good way to avoid these costs as the AdBlue system will not be in use.

3. No more Warning Lights – For those who operate a diesel vehicle, you will be no stranger to the AdBlue warning light. This appears when the AdBlue levels are running low. Some vehicles even show a countdown of how many miles are left until the car doesn’t start at all. This can be annoying to some people and so AdBlue removal is a good option to completely eliminate these warning lights.

Negatives of AdBlue Removal:

1. Illegal in some places – Removal of the AdBlue system can result in fines in some places as it is going against emission regulations. However, this doesn’t happen very often.

2. Can impact the environment – Without the AdBlue system, your vehicle can produce more nitrogen oxides, which the system would usually reduce. It isn’t a factor that you will notice when driving the vehicle, but it’s a factor for those who are concerned for the environment.

3. Insurance and warranty issues – Removing AdBlue can void warranties or affect insurance claims, but this isn’t the case for all insurance companies so do be sure to check.

In summary:

To conclude, AdBlue removal is a great service that a lot of people are now choosing. It can save you a lot of money in the long run and also reduce maintenance that may be needed. While it is important to consider the potential negatives e.g., insurance issues and effects on the environment, if you are operating a large fleet of vehicles, this can eliminate many issues and make operation a lot smoother.
