Nissan is looking to reestablish its spot in the growing entry-level subcompact SUV segment with the complete redesign of the Kicks for 2025. The simple, subtle styling has been replaced with a distinct angular look. The remake extends to the SUV’s cabin, adding a bit more space as well as upgrading the materials and the aesthetics. To make things simple, the new model comes in just three trim levels: S, SV, and SR.

However, Nissan is still offering a version of the previous model, now dubbed the Kicks Play. It retains the same styling and lower pricing as the previous version. We’re covering only the new model here.

Passenger Room and Comfort

The 5-passenger Nissan Kicks is comfortable and roomy despite being a subcompact SUV. Fitted with Nissan’s renowned “Zero Gravity” seats, front and back, it is a capable and comfortable performer, even on longer cross-town or cross-country trips. There’s 6-way driver and 4-way passenger seat adjustability. The Nissan Kicks includes “best-in-class” front-seat legroom. However, the exterior redesign ensures rear-seat passengers enjoy plenty of room to go with those comfortable seats.

As the Kicks may be the first new car for younger buyers, it’s focused on making them comfortable. A center console keeps their essentials secured: two cupholders designed to accommodate a 30-ounce tumbler and an enclosed storage compartment. Bottle holders in the doors are large enough to fit a 32-ounce Yeti tumbler. Let the road trips begin.

Features and Tech

The base-level Kicks S includes standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 7-inch touchscreen display, but if you upgrade, a 12.3-inch display becomes standard equipment. At that point, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto becomes wireless, as does your smartphone charging. With the available SR Premium Package, a 10-speaker Bose sound system offers excellent audio, even through the front headrests.

Like other Nissan vehicles, the Nissan Safety Shield is standard equipment. It offers automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and high-beam assist. The S and SV trims make adaptive cruise control standard; however, on the SR trim, you can get ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s hands-free driving technology, which is a rarity at this price point.

Materials and Design

Material qualities inside are well-designed and offer many premium features. Even the cloth seats, standard in the S and SV trims, are comfortable and attractive. Move up to the SR trim and get leatherette seats with a sporty-looking red and black cloth insert that gives the interior some visual excitement. The new Kicks looks taller, and that perception is accentuated if you add the power sliding moon roof. It gives the space a lighter, airier feel, critical to cementing the more premium feel in the new model.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

As we mentioned above, there aren’t many cubby holes to store a phone, glasses, or a purse. There is, however, plenty of room to stash a stroller in the back. There, the cargo area provides 30 cubic feet of space behind the second row. Fold down the 60/40-split rear seat, and that area expands to an impressive 60 cubic feet. A flexible luggage board is available in two upper trims, offering two levels for the trunk floor, so owners can optimize the cargo room they need. This allows you to get a completely flat load floor if you slide the piece out.

If 60 cubic feet of storage is not enough space, a small, hidden storage compartment is available below the trunk floor. The opening to the cargo area is 40.3 inches wide, and the liftover height is just 28.3 inches, making it easy to slide in all kinds of stuff, ranging from large strollers to golf bags.
