Old Volvos have a reputation for being built like tanks, but a new crash video shot in Germany suggests it’s priceless Ferraris that have the ability to destroy everything in their paths and drive on unscathed.

The footage was taken close to the Nurburgring and its stars are a classic Ferrari F40 and a 1997 Volvo 850 T-5. And while we’ve all seen plenty of videos of expensive supercars getting crunched by careless drivers at the wheel of cars that cost 100th as much, in this case it’s primarily the Ferrari driver that’s responsible for the smash.

He fails to leave enough – or any – room on his passenger side as he steers around the Volvo that’s waiting to enter a gas station and so stationary at the time of the accident. The impact isn’t massive, but it cracks the Volvo’s rear bumper and pushes the exhaust tailpipe sufficiently sideways that it snaps the rear mount, causing the pipe to drop to the floor.
Incredibly, the Ferrari appears to escape the altercation relatively undamaged. We can see a large scuff on the front clamshell just above the side repeater, but the the panel itself remains intact. Even so, we imagine the bill to put the Ferrari back into tip-top shape will be far higher than the one needed to fix the Volvo, which will probably be totalled due to its age. Hopefully if is written off the 850 T-5’s owner can buy it back and repair it.
Although it’s the Ferrari driver’s fault for striking the Volvo, something he could have easily avoided because he had room to spare on his driver’s side, the 850’s owner didn’t exactly help matters. The gas station outside the Ring is incredibly busy and, as the video on the Gumbal YouTube channel shows, he’s sticking out at a 90-degree angle to the road as he waits to enter, as if he’s decided to get gas at the last minute and is trying to cut the line.
Insurance companies love an opportunity to wriggle out of paying by pushing the blame elsewhere, and we can imagine one faced with repairing a Ferrari F40 might be keen to throw at least some pain the Volvo’s way. Who do you think is at fault?
