- It’s been reported that the next video game in line for movie magic is Sega’s OutRun.
- OutRun is an arcade game from the ’80s where players raced a Ferrari across Europe.
- Known gearhead and actress, Sydney Sweeney, will produce, with Michael Bay directing.
The latest video game title to get a movie makeover will be the arcade racing game OutRun, originally developed and published by Sega in 1986. According to reports, Michael Bay is attached as director, while Sydney Sweeney has been named as a producer. So if you’re expecting subtlety or quiet character moments, you might want to adjust your expectations accordingly.
The trend of video games getting their big-screen adaptations is nothing new. From Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter, gamers and moviegoers are used to crossing paths. Car-based games have also seen their own adaptations, including Need for Speed in 2014, starring Aaron Paul, and more recently, Gran Turismo, featuring Hollywood legends Orlando Bloom and David Harbour.

That said, OutRun — a game that burst onto the scene four decades ago — with Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney at the helm certainly wasn’t on our 2025 bingo card. However, the breakout title has been praised as one of the most influential driving games of its time.
In the original OutRun, the player pilots a convertible Ferrari Testarossa as they race across several stages. The aim is to get the fastest time while avoiding obstacles such as traffic. The game was originally only available in arcades before being released on the Sega Master System in 1987.

Deadline reports that plot details are vague, but has named Jayson Rothwell as scriptwriter, Toru Nakahara (who produced Sonic) as a producer, and that Shuji Utsumi, the president / COO of Sega, will oversee the project on behalf of Sega.
Sweeney is so far only aboard to produce, with no word on whether she will appear in the film. The actor is known to be a fan of classic cars and has her own TikTok account dedicated to vintage vehicles, Syds_Garage. Meanwhile, Michael Bay is known for his action sequences and has directed some well-known car-centric films, such as the first two installments of Bad Boys and the first five Transformers live-action films.
