I have purchased XC60 D4 with D420T5 engine, did oil change and everything was fine, however after 1000km it did infamous add 0.5L of engine oil, i have learned that if it wants 0.5L of oil it is usually 1L short, after adding it asked for another 0.5L of oil every 500km. This car is Inscription model and in very good condition and i liked it, went to my local Volvo mechanic, third party not Volvo, however the guy is doing Volvos for 20 years and have all official diagnostics, DPF was almost full and he said this is oil consumption and engine needs to be rebuild (other things where also checked to confirm), since i really liked the car i went on with it, i will post some images as i dont have much.
1. Engine head removed, at the 130m/240kkm the cylinder walls where in good shape:
2. The intake manifold was full of carbon gunk, as these engines burn oil the leave carbon behind, i am guessing previous owner drove it like this for a lot of miles
3. EGR valve cooler was also full of carbon, almost wet like:
4. We did some cleaning, ultrasonic block, pistons, head
5. EGR pipe had to be replaced it sustained higher temperatures and cracked on one place
6. The block was honed at the machine shop
7. Original VOLVO oem parts where used, such as piston rings and others i will list all parts that we replaced at the end
8. Running engine after the work as done:
9. List of parts that where replaced for this engine rebuild
1. Piston rings
2. Crankshaft bearings
3. Head gasket
4. intake gasket
5. EGR Pipe
6. Head screws (the old ones where stripped)
7. Intake manifold (Old one could not be salvaged)
8. All Valve rubbers/Seals
9. Injector washers
10. The head was completely rebuild, all valves and their sealers where replaced, head was also machined.
11. Entire exaust system was removed and cleaned, including DPF, chemical cleaning.
12. Transmission was serviced, oil with wash, software upgrade with Vida.
In the previous video you can hear how the engine works and its more silent than it used to be, we will see if the oil consumption is resolved, but this mechanic says he already did these models before and a lot of them so he is confident, he suggested standard engine piston ring bed in procedures which i will follow. He also gave me warranty.
The pistons where not changed as they where good, suggestion is now to shorted the oil change interval to something normal like 5-6K miles / 10K km, in the service book i see 15kM/30K km change intervals, this is too much.
Now as i live in Bosnia, the mechanic working hours are not that expensive, so total was around 2250EURO, including transmission service and machining, about 850EUR where labor cost. If anyone wants more information feel free to ask
