US Patent Reveals Genesis GV90 Coach Door to Feature Pillarless System

We are looking forward with excitement as new information comes to light about the upcoming Genesis GV90. It has been uncovered that Genesis has secured U.S. patents that point to a groundbreaking door system for their flagship SUV: a pillarless coach door design. This innovative feature, previously seen on the Genesis Neolun concept, is poised to redefine luxury and convenience in the SUV segment.

The Technology Behind the Transformation

The patents reveal the intricate engineering required to create a pillarless, rear-hinged door system. Unlike traditional car doors, which rely on a B-pillar for structural support, the GV90’s system appears to integrate that support directly into the doors themselves. This creates a massive, unobstructed opening for entry and exit, offering an experience typically reserved for ultra-luxury vehicles.

The patents, titled “CINCHING DEVICE FOR DOOR LATCHES IN VEHICLE” and “DOOR LATCH DEVICE FOR VEHICLES,” detail the sophisticated mechanisms that make this possible.

  • Cinching Device: This patent describes a highly advanced latching system. It uses a “cinching actuator” and “lead screw” to ensure the multiple latches on the doors close securely and with a consistent, luxurious feel. The inclusion of a “spring structure” is particularly noteworthy, as it suggests the system can absorb slight differences in the closing motion of the latches, guaranteeing a perfect fit every time. This level of precision is crucial for a pillarless design, where a tight seal is essential for both safety and a quiet cabin.
  • Door Latch Device: This patent focuses on the overall door mechanism, including a “pop-up guide unit” and “locking unit.” These components are designed to guide the door into its final position and lock it securely. The “door sagging prevention bracket” is a key element, highlighting Genesis’s commitment to durability and long-term quality. This bracket is designed to support the weight of the long, pillarless doors, preventing them from sagging over time.

Why This Matters for the Luxury Market

The inclusion of pillarless coach doors in the production version of the Genesis GV90 is a bold statement. This design is extremely complex and expensive to engineer, which is why it is so rarely seen outside of limited-run, high-end models like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. By bringing this feature to the GV90, Genesis is signaling its ambition to directly challenge established players in the ultra-luxury space.

This patent-backed technology confirms that Genesis isn’t just offering a design gimmick. The company has invested in the fundamental engineering required to make this feature safe, reliable, and functional for a production vehicle. The result will be an SUV that not only looks stunning but also provides a level of ingress and egress that is both unique and supremely comfortable for passengers.

The Genesis GV90, with its patent-protected, pillarless coach door system, is shaping up to be a true game-changer in the luxury SUV market. As Genesis continues to push the boundaries of design and technology, the GV90 stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to an unparalleled automotive experience.
