2015 XC60 electrical problems, where to look? | SwedeSpeed

Hey y’all,

The sunroof drains blocked on our 2015 XC60 while we were away on vacation. When my wife came back after 2 weeks away, there was a lot of water pooled in the driver side footwell. She baled the worst of it and dried the footwell as best she could.

When I came back about 3 weeks later, I noticed that although the car drives just fine, there are lots of problems. I don’t think anyone drove the car in the interrim, so I don’t know whether these problems started right away after the water ingress.

These are the problems I’ve noticed:

  • The entertainment system controls in the center panel don’t work much.
The screen is OK, and I can work it with the steering wheel controls. I think the on/off button works to some extent, sometimes, but there’s no volume control, and the tuning knob doesn’t work at all.
  • There is no sound at all (although the blinkers do click).
  • It seems the bluetooth phone hookup is nonfunctional.
I can place calls from the phone or from the steering wheel controls, but there’s no sound and no microphone pickup.
  • The sunroof controls don’t work at all.
  • The power mirror controls seemed wonky to me, but my wife tells me they worked for her this morning.

There may be other problems that I haven’t discovered yet.
The car had previously exhibited some amount of trouble. I have seen occasional alarm system warnings. The battery was replaced last fall, but we still get “battery voltage low” warnings.
I’ve discovered the secret handshake to reset the BMS, so I’ll try that today.

What I’ve otherwise done so far:

  • Manually opened the sunroof and cleaned the drains – now I know this is a thing :/.
  • Found a wiring diagram online (WIRING DIAGRAM 2014/2015A TP 39273202).
I’m not sure this is absolutely correct for my Volvo, but at least all the wiring harnesses I’ve looked at are where the diagram indicates.
  • Tested all fuses in the engine compartment and under the glove compartment, they’re all good.
  • Removed the trim around the driver’s side door.
  • Took a look at the floor harness, which is slightly wet, but looks fine.
  • Started removing the trim on the A-pillar to look at the connector up there (74/412).
This is on the theory that the water ingressed down the inside of the A-pillar, and might have soaked that connector. The connector looked fine to my eye from a bit of a distance, but unfortunately I ran out of time, and had to button up before I could quite tear into it all the way.

I’m reasonably handy and I have all reasonable tools, both mechanical and electrical. I have in the past done electronics repair for fun, mainly fixing up old test gear and home appliances. So I have e.g. a DMM, a clamp meter, oscilloscopes etc.
I don’t have any OBD2 tools, though.

While I can read schematics, I’m very new to car electronics and the wiring diagrams are still fairly opaque to me.

I guess I’m working on the hypothesis that the car has dropped a CAN or LIN bus that’s shared by the wonky components – does that sound reasonable?
I’m not sure how to diagnose or isolate from here though, so I’m looking for opinions and advice on where to go next.

Thanks in advance,
Siggi
