Ford is taking a bold leap forward with what CEO Jim Farley calls its “Model T moment” for electric vehicles, aiming to make EVs more affordable and appealing to everyday buyers.

Instead of adapting existing designs, Ford has built innovation into the foundation with its new Universal EV Platform and Universal EV Production System. These will serve as the backbone for a range of cost-friendly, fun-to-drive, and technologically advanced electric models.

The first vehicle in this lineup will be a mid-size all-electric pickup truck arriving in 2027 with a starting price near $30,000. Ford says it will deliver acceleration comparable to a Mustang EcoBoost while offering more passenger space than a RAV4, along with a usable bed and a front trunk.

The manufacturing overhaul is equally significant. The truck’s wiring harness is 4,000 feet shorter than the one in Ford’s first electric SUV, and the overall architecture uses 20 percent fewer parts, 25 percent fewer fasteners, and 40 percent fewer workstations. These efficiencies should allow the Louisville Assembly Plant to build the truck 40 percent faster than current models.

Battery technology plays a starring role. Ford is using advanced prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate batteries that form part of the vehicle’s structure and floor. These batteries eliminate cobalt and nickel, reducing costs and weight, while improving handling, lowering the center of gravity, and freeing up more cabin space.

The company is investing heavily in this transformation, with billions allocated toward plant upgrades and domestic LFP battery production. This effort is expected to secure thousands of manufacturing jobs.

Although Ford has yet to reveal the truck’s official name, there is speculation it could revive the Ranchero nameplate. Full specifications, including range, charging times, and battery sizes, will be announced closer to the launch.

For now, the stage is set. Ford’s push for affordable, exciting electric vehicles could mark a major turning point in the EV market, and all eyes will be on 2027 to see if this new era delivers on its promise.
