  • Mazda sold 1,163 MX-5s in July, a massive 130.8 percent year-over-year increase.
  • CX-30 demand collapsed 34.7 percent in 2025, with sales falling to 39,112 units.
  • Mazda sold 255K vehicles through July, up 5.4 percent over the same period in 2024.

Despite an industry shift toward heavier, tech-laden crossovers and SUVs, there’s still life in the lightweight sports car segment. That much is clear from the recent sales surge of the Mazda MX-5 in the United States, where enthusiasm for open-air driving and nimble handling hasn’t faded.

The MX-5 is doing more than holding its ground; it’s doing its part to drive overall growth for Mazda in what’s already been a strong 2025. Sales data from Mazda reveal that a total of 1,163 MX-5s were sold in July, a massive 130.8 percent increase from the 504 sold in July 2024.

Importantly for Mazda, it’s not just July when sales of the MX-5 have spiked. Year-to-date, MX-5 sales are up 31.7 percent over 2024 with 5,935 units finding new homes. That means Mazda has sold more MX-5s this year than Mazda 3 Hatchbacks (5,527) through the first seven months of 2025.

Looking elsewhere across the Mazda range, the CX-5 remains its best-selling model with 85,799 units sold this year, a 3.8 percent increase. The CX-50 has also surged in popularity to become Mazda’s second best-selling model. This year, 60,724 examples of the SUV that borrows its hybrid system from the RAV4 have found new homes, a 40.4 percent increase from the 43,244 sold over the same period last year.

Elsewhere, the CX-90 saw a 23 percent jump in sales to 34,799 units, and the CX-70 climbed sharply, up 403.9 percent to 9,958.

The Not So Good

Sales of the Mazda3 have fallen 12.7 percent this year, down to 19,028 units. More significant was the collapse in interest for the CX-30. Through the first seven months of the year, 39,112 units were sold, down 34.7 percent from the 59,901 sold during the same period last year.

Even with a few setbacks, Mazda’s overall U.S. performance is trending upward. Between January and July 2025, the company sold 255,355 vehicles, an increase of 5.4 percent over the same period last year, when it moved 242,352 units.
