So looking for some advice here. Previously I was not certain where it was coming from. At the time I confirmed that it was not coming from either of the drains that go into the transmission tunnel area (one is a/c – other may be for cabin air filter/cabin air intake). I also removed the right sill and confirmed that the sunroof drain was attached and also I tested the drain by pouring water into the right front sunroof drain and it properly drained out under the car via the tube with nothing entering inside car or leaking out of gromet where it goes into the sill drain.
So the other night we have a very heavy rain overnight and when I got in car there was some water on the rubber floor mat. Given it was fresh it gave be a chance to do some investigation. I removed sill again and the water appeared to be travelling down the exterior of the sunroof drain. However, I then remove the small vertical plastic piece that is between right end of glove box and door as well as the roundish cap on the right end of the glove box. Interestingly the sunroof drain tube seems to take a left turn under the dash, however, but of these parts has water on the backside of them.
This leads me to two thoughts:
1) Could be an issue with windshield seal on right side that is leaking into the A-Pillar (windshield has never been replaced).
2) Issue with the sunroof drain or drain tube – perhaps the water volume was so much that it could not handle and overflowed?
I plan to test first by hosing copious amounts of water in the windshield and seeing if there is any water travelling on the right side. If that is negative then I will try to supply large volume to the right sunroof drain and see what happens there.
One question I had is that I would like to expose the train in the A pillar. Looks like under the “SRS” plastic cover there is a bolt. Can I just remove this bolt and remove the trim piece (any tips on how it attaches or how to remove it after the bolt is out. There is also a vent running into this.
Below is a picture and I am pointing to the general areas where there was water behind the plastic coverings (and how high up it was) – clearly at least above the drain tube turn – however, I suspect that underneath it turns back and runs of the A-Pillar to the sunroof.
Appreciate any thoughts or insight here. I know that previously there was a suggestion that I determine if it was coming through the firewall (somebody here had that issue – but the water was following transmission tunnel all the way to rear – which is not happening to me and my experience this weekend is that the water is entering at a point above the firewall entry point given how high up on the plastic pieces I removed the water was).
