Sounds like a product disaster from 5,000 per year to 1,500 per year. Wonder what went wrong. |

The two most common reasons that I’ve heard over the years was 1) the vehicle was not profitable for Volvo to produce, and 2) there was little difference – at least as far as the average Joe Blow consumer is concerned – between the R and other models to justify the higher purchase price. |

Add to that………..no marketing, huge lease incentives, and numerous service issues (some due to incompetent service support) = buh bye. Volvo is not equipped to handle this type of consumer whether from a product or product support standpoint. |

Wonder what went wrong!!!
How about NO Volvo or dealer backing for the car. On and on….. ad nauseum |
My 2¢ on this major misstep by Volvo:
After reading the pre-release review in Car & Driver I knew that I would be buying one of the V70Rs sooner or later. As to whether:
Volvo Couldn’t Make a Profit On It – Said C&D article stated categorically that this was to be a limited-production model and, as such, would not be discounted in the normal We-Gotta-Move-This-Iron-Today! fashion;
The Average Joe Blow Volvo Buyer Couldn’t Tell the Difference Between the R and the Other Volvos on Offer – Well, that same Joe Blow couldn’t tell a high-pressure R/T5 from a low-pressure GLT (or whatever) during the P1s run so why would he suddenly become a car guy (Volvo: Are you there!?! Oh, guess not.
);
No Marketing, Huge Lease Incentives – Wow, wonder what happened to the marketing model propounded in the C&D article? Better yet, wonder what happened to the genius(es) who dreamed the R up in the first place. Probably got promoted to a place where he(they) couldn’t do so much damage;
How About NO Volvo or Dealer Backing for the Car,
No Knowledgable Servicing,
Oddball Issues that Never Got Straightened Out,
MANY Breakdowns Where the Owners Were Left Stranded –
All I can say is that I’m really, really glad that I ignored all this and bought one anyway. Well, so far… (fingers crossed)
Now, if we could just find out who it was that dreamed up the R and/or made it happen we could buy him (them) a
next time we’re in town.
