Suzuki S-Cross: Future of the brand’s slowest-selling car in Australia in doubt

Suzuki S-Cross: Future of the brand’s slowest-selling car in Australia in doubt

Suzuki’s independent distributor in Queensland has discontinued the S-Cross SUV, while the brand’s main Australian importer claims it will “continue to be on sale” but has not committed to mild-hybrid tech or a necessary AEB update.

The Suzuki S-Cross has been discontinued in at least one Australian state amid low sales and an inability to meet new regulations in its current specification.

Suzuki’s independent distributor for Queensland and the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales – separate from Suzuki Australia, which handles operations in all other areas of the country – has confirmed it has axed the S-Cross small SUV.

Suzuki Queensland marketing manager Jake Tobin told Drive no brand-new examples of the S-Cross remain in stock in the region it covers, but the distributor would continue to “monitor this nameplate in future to see if it makes a comeback”.

“We have discontinued the S-Cross and will monitor this nameplate in future to see if it makes a comeback at some point,” Tobin said in a written statement.

“We do have minimal stock with some of our dealerships (demo/service loaners) but that is it.”

A Suzuki Australia spokesperson told Drive it will continue to sell the S-Cross – with Model Year 2023 (MY23) examples still listed on its website , along with the most recent MY24 – but did not comment on any future updates, which are needed to continue building it for Australia.

Changes to its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system are required to import new S-Cross examples into Australia, along with the Vitara and three-door Jimny.

“S-Cross, in its current product specification, [will] continue to be on sale in Australia,” the spokesperson said.

“Updates to these specifications, if applicable, will be the subject of future communications.”

Suzuki Australia has confirmed an updated Vitara with a mild-hybrid system and upgrades to its AEB system to meet the new Australian standards – which were introduced on March 1, 2025 – will arrive between January and March 2026.

An update to the three-door Jimny is also expected later this year, though exact timing hasn’t been confirmed, while the five-door Jimny XL, Swift and incoming Fronx already meet the standard.

The current Suzuki S-Cross, built in Hungary alongside the Vitara, dates back to 2013 as a successor to the SX4 hatchback.

A comprehensive update was launched in late 2022, bringing a new look and price rises of between $10,000 and $12,000 – but hybrid versions available in Europe have not been offered in Australia.

More-affordable front-wheel drive versions were re-introduced in 2024, but between January and June 2025, deliveries of the S-Cross have fallen 32 per cent over the same time last year, from 463 to 315.

It is the slowest-selling Suzuki model in Australia, behind the Jimny (4365), Swift (1953), Vitara (1382) and now-discontinued Ignis (513).
