Porsche’s Upcoming 911 Was Born To Race

  • Porsche is putting the finishing touches on the new 911 GT3 Cup.
  • It will debut this summer with improved aerodynamics and an upgraded powertrain.
  • The car will be eligible to compete in the 2026 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Porsche introduced the updated 911 Carrera 4S earlier this month and now the company is turning its attention to the track. As part of this effort, they’re gearing up to unveil the new 911 GT3 Cup this summer.

The Gen 992.2 race car has been “comprehensively optimized” and development started in January of 2024. Porsche isn’t saying much about the model at this point, but they focused on improving front end aerodynamics. That’s not much to go on, but we can see repositioned hood vents and a new trapezoidal lower intake.

They’re joined by a prominent front splitter, an updated bumper, and a sizable wing. The model also sports a lightly revised rear end with a repositioned lower brake light.

Porsche only provided a few glimpses of the interior, but it looks like the latest 911 GT3 Cup has an updated steering wheel and a revamped digital instrument cluster. They’re joined by a roll cage and a racing seat.

While the automaker was coy on specifics, they promised “numerous improvements in areas such as safety and electronics, brakes, power transmission and the six-cylinder boxer engine, as well as vehicle handling.”

We’ll learn full details in the coming weeks, but the current model has a 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine developing 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed sequential transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential.

The company said development is “largely completed” and they’ve been testing prototypes with eFuel used in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. As part of this process, the car has already tackled the Italian Grand Prix circuit in Monza as well as the Lausitzring in Germany.

The new 911 GT3 Cup will be eligible to compete in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and in selected Carrera Cup series from the start of the 2026 season. Porsche went on to note the company has already built 5,381 Cup cars, making them “among the most produced racing cars in the world.”

Porsche Motorsport’s Project Manager for GT racing cars, Jan Feldmann, added “We are already operating at a very high-performance level with the current 911 GT3 Cup. This has allowed us to focus more on feedback from the global one-make cups and develop a racing car that has been refined in many areas compared to the current Cup 911.”
