2026 Subaru Uncharted electric car revealed as Toyota twin with video game-inspired name

The Subaru Uncharted is the brand’s version of the new electric Toyota C-HR+ coupe-styled SUV, and shares its name with a successful video game series.

Subaru has unveiled its third electric car – a smaller sibling to the Solterra and Trailseeker SUVs – in a continuation of its partnership with Toyota.

Revealed in the US this week, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted – sharing its name with the successful action-adventure video game series – is a reworked version of the upcoming Toyota C-HR+ small-to-medium-sized electric SUV unveiled in March.

It follows Subaru’s first electric vehicle, the Solterra – a near-identical twin to the Toyota bZ4X EV – and the wagon-like Trailseeker electric SUV, which debuted in April ahead of its Toyota bZ4X Touring relation.

The Uncharted name follows a similar off-road theme to Subaru’s Trailseeker, Crosstrek, Forester, Outback and Ascent SUVs – though an entry-level front-wheel-drive version will be offered in the US, along with Subaru-signature all-wheel-drive editions.

In its US media release, Subaru has named the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV as key rivals to the Uncharted, claiming its new model offers a greater driving range, more power, and optional all-wheel drive.

Matching the Toyota C-HR+ it is based on – marketed in the US without its ‘plus’ designation as the standard C-HR hybrid is not sold there – all-wheel-drive versions of the Subaru Uncharted produce 252kW from two electric motors, for a claimed circa-5.2-second 0-100km/h sprint.

Subaru’s most powerful petrol-engined cars in local showrooms are the 202kW WRX sedan and wagon, while the current 160kW Solterra is likely to be succeeded eventually by a 252kW XT dual-motor version revealed for the US.

Uncharted models in the US will be equipped with a 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery for claimed driving ranges in US EPA testing of 467km with AWD, and “more than” 483km with FWD.

For context, Toyota claims between 525km and 600km of range for an equivalent C-HR+ in European WLTP testing, the protocol commonly used in Australia.

Compared to the Toyota it is based on, the Uncharted has a different front-end design that is identical to the larger Solterra and Trailseeker, revised tail-lights, new alloy wheels, a unique rear bumper, and standard roof rails.

Inside, the Uncharted is similar to other shared electric SUVs from Subaru and Toyota, with a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, and dual wireless smartphone chargers.

Subaru Australia is yet to confirm if the Uncharted will launch in Australia, or even confirm plans for the new Trailseeker and facelifted Solterra for our market.

“The global unveiling of the Subaru Uncharted BEV is very exciting, marking another step forward in the brand’s electrification journey. Watch this space,” a Subaru Australia spokesperson told Drive.

Toyota Australia is also yet to confirm its C-HR+ twin-under-the-skin for local showrooms.

Meanwhile, the bZ4X Touring – a stretched bZ4X twinned with the Subaru Trailseeker – has been announced to launch in the first half of next year.
