Grant Stahla
Grant Stahla, Co-owner of Stahla Services, a nationwide provider of restroom, shower, and ADA trailer rentals again joins Enterprise Radio.

On this episode, the focus will be on the 8 Stall Shower Trailer, all the benefits and the specifics of renting this particular trailer for your needs.

Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Grant Stahla discuss the following:

(Host Eric Dye): Grant, who’s reaching for this trailer? Can you share the kinds of situations it’s built for and how you figure out if it’s got enough capacity for, say, a big event or a work crew?”

(Guest Grant Stahla): Absolutely, yeah. So this eight station shower trailer it’s a beast. It’s a big trailer, really long up to about 4,045 feet long, and they’re able to support some of the biggest gatherings of people out there. So just a quick summary of this eight station shower is that a lot of times it’s used for natural disaster or big events to be able to support hundreds of people that are there overnight, some sort of a campsite situation that don’t have hotel access or camper access. So it’s a great solution for lots of people out there. So excited to talk about the 8 stall shower trailer.

(Host Eric Dye): What’s a memorable story of this trailer in action? Maybe a festival, a tough job site, or something unexpected?

(Guest Grant Stahla):  Yeah, yeah, that’s good. We have several of those. One of them I’m thinking of we brought services. My wife and I actually did this event last year. We brought two shower trailers out in the mountains, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and we were there supporting a running race where they were running for over 100 miles and there was multiple sites where the runners would stop and stay overnight and then they would get up the next day and run another 20-30 miles. I mean, I just couldn’t believe it. They’re in the mountains running a marathon, but my wife and I, we would then follow with these two eight station restroom trailers and go to the next location after. After the runners woke up, they would shower, they’d brush their teeth, there are sinks in these shower trailers as well, and then they would go off to the races and Erin and I would pack these up and then drive about 20-30 miles down the road and then set them up again so that when the runners came in, they would in the afternoon, they’d be able to stop, grab their change of clothes, and hop in the shower. the cool thing about these is there’s individual shower base for each shower. And there’s a changing room outside of the shower, so you’re able to kind of freshen up fully, like you would at your shower at home. There’s a couple different models. There’s a big shower or rooms. So there’s showers that are big on the men’s side and then a big women’s side four and four or six. And two is how it’s divided up. And then there’s also 8 stall showers that have their own individual rooms. So these had a mixture of both individual rooms and then one of them was a big two individual big rooms, but that was definitely a memorable event. It was fun to see those runners sweating and bloody and tired and able to go and get perfectly clean with these trailers and we supported them with generators and water as well. So they’re fully off grid that was a lot of fun. Thanks for asking, Eric.

(Host Eric Dye): Can you break down the cost of getting this trailer? What’s renting it look like—daily, weekly, or long-term—and what about buying one outright?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : Yeah, that’s a good question. So the 8 stall shower trailer is, you know, it’s a unique trailer. So you’re gonna have a little bit higher prices than some of the smaller, let’s say, restroom trailers. They’re more common. So some of the purchase prices, they’re all around 110,000, plus or minus about $10,000. So you’re gonna be looking at anywhere from $100,000 to $120,000? So that gives you about an average of $14,000 per shower head. The other pricing for that for a weekend rental, you’re gonna be looking at about $10,000 for that rental. And that’s up to a week. And then monthly pricing is about $13,000 per 28 days. And then if you have it for longer, it goes down to about $12,000. Eleven thousand all the way down to $10,000 if you have it for six months or longer. So that’s some of the overall general pricing on that unit. Of course, there’s some additional services like I was talking about on that running race. You have waste tank pump outs so you need to make sure that you you’re able to pump out the gray water on that. Typically, that’s about $500 per pump out because these trailers are about 1100 gallons. For their waste tank and then water tank fill there is about a 200 gallon freshwater tank. So typically that’s about $300 to fill that fresh water tank and then the generator rental if you don’t have power access, that’s going to be about $500.00 for a weekend event or if you need it for a 28 day rental, you’re going to be at about $2000.00 for that 20 kilowatt towable generator that you’ll need. Plus, there’s gonna be some fuel, so I would factor in additional $500.00 for fuel plus delivery for that big generator that you need to rent it. But those are some of the overall costs for freshwater fill grey water pump out and generator usage on that 8 stall shower trailer.

(Host Eric Dye) : Paint us a picture of this trailer’s design. What do you see walking up to it, and what’s the experience like stepping inside?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : You bet. Yeah. So like I mentioned earlier, there’s a few different configurations. There’s the individual rooms where you have 8 doors on one side of the trailer where you walk in and it’s just you in there. Inside of that, you’re going to have a little sink off to your left as you walk in and then in front of you. You’ll have a couple of towel hooks or purse hooks and just a good changing area with a bench you can sit down and take off your shoes. And then inside the shower stall is about 42 by 36 inches or 36 by 36, depending on some of the layout. So it’s about 3 foot by three foot consistently. There’s always gonna be a little mirror in there and just everything that you need to be able to just fully feel taken care of, there’s an overhead vent. There’s a shower curtain halfway into the stall and some trailers have extension cord or electrical connections to be able to plug in your blow dryer or things like that. That’s going to be pretty limited, because when you’re running off of generator power or plugging into some facility they don’t want you to be pulling too much power because you’ll be tripping breakers if several people have a blow dryer going. But that’s a little bit of an overview of those individual rooms on a different trailer with just two entry doors. You’re gonna have them then side at a women’s side and then some of the trailers are split into four bays on each side and there’s no changing that. And then there’s certain shower trailers it’s called a flex model, and there’s two doors on the inside where you can have two of the showers go either way. So if you wanted to, you could change the four and four configuration to be a six, six showers on one side and 2 on the other. So you could have two mens and six women’s or vice versa. You could have six men’s and two women’s. Or you could just do the four and four. So that’s why a flex shower trailer is pretty handy. There’s just n aisle running down the, let’s say, the passenger side of that trailer. And then inside of each stall, you have complete privacy with panels where you have the changing area and the shower stalls. So that’s a quick overview of some of the layouts of that trailer.

(Host Eric Dye) : What does it take to keep this trailer running smoothly? Can you walk us through its water, power, and transport requirements?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : Yeah, you bet. So like I said earlier, the fresh water’s 200 gallon tank wastewater is about 1100 gallon tank. For power, you’re gonna want three or four connections to 110 Volt, 15 amp connections of power in the winter, you’ll want four connections in the summer. You’re good with three connections to power, you should just be good with one garden hose connection for water as long as you’re not using the showers constantly. You hook it up and it provides water to that fresh water internal tank and there’s a float system where you turn that garden hose on and it’ll fill that internal water tank up to the top of that 200 gallon tank. And then as the water is used, it will set off the flow and that float will turn it so your garden hose will come back on so you’re consistently. You have about 200 gallons of margin, so even if you’re using it pretty heavily, you could probably get through about 20 or 30 showers without that 200 gallon running dry, so that’s pretty handy. This trailer is 28 feet long and 32 feet long with a tongue. The width is 8 1/2 feet wide and then with the steps down you’re about 10 1/2 feet wide. And then the trailer is about 12 feet tall with a A/C unit. The weight of the trailers is about 13,000 lbs. and there’s two 7000 LB axles on there. So you have a little bit of margin on there with the gross vehicle weight rating and just hooking it up. It’s your standard across all these trailers two and five sixteenths connections. But you’re gonna be a lot more tongue weight at about 12 hundred 1300 lbs of tongue weight. So you definitely want a one ton pickup. Ideally with a dually rear end on that to be able to hold all this longer trailer with more tongue weight.

(Host Eric Dye) : Grant, if listeners need to remember just one thing about this trailer, what should it be?

(Guest Grant Stahla) : Oh man. Well, kind of like a lego set. This thing can be combined with a bunch of other trailers to create a really cool situation. So if you’re, if you’re putting on a big event and need to support 1000 people, you might want to get ten of these shower trailers and maybe 12 restroom trailers. Either 8 station or 10 station and potentially a longer trailer and some bunkhouses and then you can have a fully supported man camp. You can also have that when you’re dealing with hurricanes or floods or fires, you can bring these eight station shower trailers anywhere you want and be able to support people that are overnight in an area that do not have hotels or campers, just gives you a lot of flexibility. To make sure people are taken care of and they can be on site longer than three days without feeling gross and grimy, and they can do the important work that that they’re setting out to do. So I would say that’s one of my favorite things about these shower trailers is they unlike any other trailer, I would say they really set people up for success when they’re out there, especially with disaster relief. It really helps them out to be able to take a shower and get clean at the end of the day.
