2026 Honda CR-V Trailsport Review: It’s slightly more rugged

For the 2026 model year, the Honda CR-V has received a few small updates, but the biggest news is the introduction of the slightly more rugged CR-V Trailsport. The 2026 Honda CR-V Trailsport adds a layer of ruggedness to Honda’s best selling model.

At the heart of the 2026 CR-V Trailsport is a hybrid-only powertrain that pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, producing a combined 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This setup delivers smooth, confident acceleration while also keeping fuel efficiency in check, since the hybrid powertrain can get up to 40 mpg. The CR-V isn’t exactly fast, but it has enough power to get around town easily.

The Trailsport’s updated all-wheel drive system is the real story, offering improved torque distribution with a new 50/50 split capability between the front and rear wheels. In a demo on traction rollers, the 2026 Trailsport outperformed the 2025 version, proving that the revised system sends more torque to the wheels with grip when it’s needed most.

The CR-V Trailsport lacks underbody skid plates and a lifted suspension, like you get with the more rugged Passport Trailsport. The model-specific Continental CrossContact ATR all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch Shark Gray wheels add grip over dirt and gravel. We had the chance to test it on a motocross course, where the CR-V held its own, showcasing impressive traction and effective hill descent control for light off-roading.

On the road, the 2026 CR-V Trailsport is just as composed as the rest of the CR-V lineup. There’s little trade-off for its off-road enhancements: the all-terrain tires don’t create extra noise or harshness, and the slightly stiff suspension helps keep body roll in check. It feels agile, almost sedan-like, on winding roads. During our drive through San Diego’s backroads, the CR-V delivered a surprisingly sporty feel that sets it apart from some of its competitors.

The Trailsport trim brings a bit of visual flair, too. A unique lower front fascia with silver trim, orange exterior badging, and interior accents help it stand out, while a model-exclusive Ash Green color adds an earthy, adventurous tone. Inside, the cabin is comfortable and modern, and all 2026 CR-V models now come standard with a 9-inch touchscreen. Upper trims get a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.

The 2026 Honda CR-V Trailsport sits above the Sport Hybrid and below the Sport-L Hybrid models. The pricing for the CR-V Trailsport starts at $40,195.

While it’s true that the 2026 Honda CR-V Trailsport feels more like a rugged styling package than a full-fledged off-roader due to the lack of lift and underbody protection, it still delivers added confidence on dirt roads and trails.
