BYD Cars Malaysia teases something new – Atto 2?

BYD Sime Motors looks like it could be introducing a new BYD model in Malaysia in the near future, with the company putting out a “coming soon” teaser post on its BYD Cars Malaysia Instagram page. There’s no real clue as to what’s heading our way though, as some generated paw prints and a cryptic ‘Don’t worry, be capy’ message are the only things that precede the next change mention.

From a model standpoint though, hazarding a guess would put the Atto 2 right up there. The all-electric SUV, which made its debut in China as the Yuan Up in 2024, was shown at the Bangkok International Motor Show in March, indicating that a regional introduction was on the cards at some point this year.

Cementing the likelihood of it being the mystery offering is the recent confirmation of it being slated for Australia later this year, and it also now appearing on the radar in the Phillipines.

Should it make its way here as suggested, the Atto 2 would slot in between the Dolphin and Atto 3, with its pricing sandwiched accordingly. Currently, the Dolphin is priced from RM100,700 to RM125,600 (OTR), while Atto 3 Ultra goes for RM123,800.

In China, the Atto 2/Yuan Up is offered in five variants priced between 96,800 and 119,800 yuan (about RM59k and RM73k). Two powertrains are available in its domestic market, with the first sporting a front electric motor rated at 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque, and the second a more powerful 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 290 Nm unit.

Energy comes from a Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with two options on that front. There’s a 32 kWh unit, which provides 301 km of CLTC-rated range, while the other is a 45.12 kWh unit, which bumps the maximum range to 401 km, also under the CLTC standard.

Global markets outside China get the more powerful motor and larger capacity battery, and so we can expect that configuration when the SUV appears. In terms of juicing up the pack, 65 kW of DC fast charging gets the 45.12 kWh pack from a 10 to 80% state of charge in 37 minutes, while an 11 kW AC wallbox fully charges the car in 5.5 hours.

Kit, as seen on the Thai show example, includes 16-inch alloy wheels, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen and powered front seats. So, will the model in that it be the Atto 2? We’ll find out soon enough, as well as why there is a capybara mention in that mix.
