KIA EV3: Conquering 431km on a Single Charge – A Real-World Efficiency Test

KIA EV3: Conquering 431km on a Single Charge – A Real-World Efficiency Test

Posted on July 3, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on KIA EV3: Conquering 431km on a Single Charge – A Real-World Efficiency Test

We recently put the Kia EV3 Earth (middle trim) with an 81.4 kWh battery pack to a rigorous real-world test, embarking on a non-stop journey from San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid) to Alicante. This challenging trip, covering a total distance of 431.7 km, aimed to assess the EV3’s true capabilities in a single charge, directly comparing its performance to a well-known efficiency benchmark: the Tesla Model 3.

The Journey Begins: Setting the Stage for a Long-Range Challenge

Our Kia EV3 started the journey with an impressive 98% battery state of charge, indicating a projected range of 588 km. This promising figure set the stage for our ambitious goal: to complete the 431.7 km journey without a single stop for charging.

Accompanying us on this long-distance test was a Tesla Model 3 Highland Standard Range, equipped with 19-inch wheels. The Model 3, renowned for its aerodynamic design and efficiency, would serve as a crucial benchmark throughout the trip. While the EV3 boasts a WLTP range of 605 km, the Model 3 Highland Standard Range has a WLTP rating of 513 km with the 19″ wheels.

Real-World Performance: Kia EV3 Delivers on Range

As the kilometers melted away on the highway, the Kia EV3 consistently demonstrated its efficiency. We successfully completed the entire 431.7 km journey from San Sebastián de los Reyes to Alicante on a single charge. Upon arrival, the EV3 still had a reassuring 12% battery remaining, translating to approximately 63 km of additional range.

The average energy consumption for our Kia EV3 throughout this demanding trip was an excellent 15.5 kWh/100km. This real-world figure highlights the EV3’s optimized energy management, making long-distance travel a comfortable and confident experience, largely alleviating common concerns about range anxiety.

Benchmarking Against the Best: EV3 vs. Tesla Model 3 Highland

Our companion Tesla Model 3 Highland Standard Range, thanks to its superior aerodynamics, achieved an even lower consumption of 13.5 kWh/100km over the same route. This difference underscores the impact of aerodynamic design on EV efficiency, particularly at highway speeds. However, it’s important to note that despite its better consumption figure, the Tesla Model 3 did require a charging stop along the way due to its smaller battery capacity and lower WLTP range compared to the EV3.

Driving Dynamics: Comfort for the Long Haul

Beyond raw efficiency numbers, the Kia EV3 offered a remarkably smooth and comfortable driving experience. The cabin remained quiet throughout the journey, and the ride quality absorbed road imperfections with ease, making the long trip feel less fatiguing. The EV3’s design, while bold and contemporary, also contributes to a practical and spacious interior, essential for extended travel.

Looking Ahead: Will the Kia EV4 Sedan Challenge Tesla Model 3’s Efficiency?

The impressive performance of the Kia EV3 in real-world conditions raises an intriguing question for the future: Will the upcoming Kia EV4 sedan get closer to the Tesla Model 3’s efficiency?

With the EV4 expected to be Kia’s first global electric sedan, targeting a direct challenge to the Model 3, its aerodynamic profile and potentially optimized powertrain could significantly close the efficiency gap. Reports suggest the EV4 will also be built on Kia’s E-GMP platform, potentially leveraging similar advancements in energy management seen in the EV3. A more streamlined, sedan-specific design could undoubtedly lead to even lower drag coefficients and, consequently, improved energy consumption. The market eagerly awaits to see if Kia can truly rival the Model 3’s benchmark efficiency with the new EV4.

Conclusion: Kia EV3 Redefines Long-Distance EV Travel

Our journey from Madrid to Alicante unequivocally demonstrates the Kia EV3’s capability as a competent long-distance EV. Its ability to cover 431.7 km on a single charge with a healthy buffer and impressive consumption figures positions it as a strong contender in the electric vehicle market. While the Tesla Model 3 Highland still holds an edge in sheer aerodynamic efficiency, the EV3’s larger battery and strong real-world range performance make it a compelling choice for drivers seeking comfort, practicality, and confidence on extended trips. As Kia continues to innovate with models like the forthcoming EV4, the competition in the EV space promises to deliver even more efficient and capable electric vehicles for consumers worldwide.
