Yesterday, Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY), the newly formed Malaysian company under Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), marked its official launch at MITEC in Kuala Lumpur. The new company also introduced three key models: the Hyundai STARIA, the New Hyundai TUCSON, and the All-new Hyundai SANTA FE. The all new Santa Fe features the latest Hyundai styling cues, and features the new boxy lines rather than the curvaceous styling of the previous generation one and is my highlight of the launch.
This launch signals the beginning of a new chapter for Hyundai in Malaysia, as previously, the brand was sold through a dealer network, via Hyundai Sime Darby Motors. Now, as dealer principal status, we may see the brand come into Malaysia with more of an impact and one that should be more in line with what the third largest vehicle manufacturer in the world is. They are starting with a product lineup shaped by local demand for family-ready MPVs, versatile SUVs, and feature-rich vehicles designed for modern Malaysian lifestyles. Still in the mid-range, but with more features and as you will read, decent prices and warranty packages.
“The STARIA, New TUCSON, and All-New SANTA FE we’re introducing are products that reflect how Malaysians live, move, and travel: from versatile family needs to feature-rich, comfort-driven mobility,” shared Jahabarnisa Haja Mohideen, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Malaysia.
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Sunny Kim, President of Hyundai Motor Asia Pacific said, “This dynamic product lineup reflects our commitment to delivering innovative, customer-centric mobility solutions tailored to local needs. As Malaysia continues to grow in strategic importance within our regional vision, the launch of Hyundai Motor Malaysia marks a significant step in strengthening our presence across ASEAN.”
So the new entry level Hyundai here is now the 2025 facelifted Tucson, where there will be three variants in a 2.0liter MPi engine, a 1.6l turbo and a 1.6liter hybrid. All petrol powered. These are priced from RM143,888 onwards. All sport the new front end styling and the very nice wraparound style infotainment and instrument cluster inside. The C segment SUV looks all premium and luxurious with the materials used inside and the very cutting edge styling outside. It is also backed up with drivetrains that are potent enough and interesting.
The all new Santa Fe will have two variants, a hybird 1.6l turbo and a 2.5l turbo petrol variants. The new Santa Fe is unique in its styling as it differs from the usual rounded styling of urban SUVs and actually reminds me of a tough looking proper off-roading one should look like. That difference is a nice option for those that one to drive a slightly unique SUV. Prices start at RM225,000 onwards. I actually like how the Santa Fe looks as it does look different from the usual C and D segment SUVs you get here these days.
The actual bread and butter model for Hyundai Malaysia over the past couple of years has been the Staria. The futuristic styled large MPV is popular among private transporters and large families. There is a new Prestige variant which looks good in black with brass look trimmings. These are diesel powered, and you would need that proven 2.2liter turbodiesel to haul all the passengers and luggage around.
So all of these models are currently CBU or imported. By the end of the year HMY will locally assemble them at INOKOM’s Kulim plant, which is owned by Sime Darby, who will also be dealer partners.
I personally think that HMY need to come into the sub RM110,000 range and try to be competitive there like the once were pre-2015. They currently have some nice B segment cars that are sold regionally, like the Hyundai Stargazer, and that should be sold here as the volume seller. I however like the fact that they are cautious in that their new energy vehicle lineup now only consists of hybrids rather than bringing in the fully electric models for the moment. It is conservative, but I think with how things are shaping up (with TNB increasing tariffs and also not allowing homes with solar panels sell back their electricity to TNB but just to offset, slightly, their consumption, this lack of full EVs in their lineup could be a good thing.).
Currently, the RM150K segment is ridiculously competitive and filled with newcomers from China. They should look a segment lower before the Chinese expand their wings. High chance they will as industry pundits say that their profit margins per vehicle are the highest around and they could just step lower down if they wanted to.
To celebrate its direct entry into the Malaysian market, Hyundai Motor Malaysia is offering exclusive benefits to its new and existing customers. The first 100 customers will enjoy free service maintenance for up to eight times*, inclusive of labour and parts.
Hyundai is also reaffirming its commitment to exceptional customer care as all new vehicles will come with an 8-year / 160,000 km warranty and free maintenance labour of up to four times — offering Malaysian customers greater peace of mind, long-term confidence, and support throughout their ownership journey.
This commitment is supported by a strategic expansion of Hyundai’s nationwide aftersales network. Hyundai Motor Malaysia aims to increase its service footprint to 25 authorised outlets by 2030, ensuring better accessibility for customers across the country.
“The launch of Hyundai Motor Malaysia reflects more than just a structural shift — it represents our commitment to delivering world-class service, quality, and care directly to our customers in Malaysia,” said Young Lee, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motor Company’s Global Operation Division. “As a global brand, we are focused on building meaningful ownership experiences that reflect Hyundai’s core values of innovation, trust, and customer-first thinking. We look forward to supporting our customers here with greater responsiveness, elevated service standards, and products that truly meet their needs.”
H.E. Yeo Seung-bae, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Malaysia, commended Hyundai’s dedication to innovation and customer-centric values — hallmarks of Korean industrial excellence. He noted that the brand’s continued rollout of advanced mobility solutions and commitment to quality service reflect a broader vision of progress that puts people first. As Hyundai brings its next generation of products and customer care experiences to Malaysian drivers, he expressed optimism that such efforts will deepen bilateral ties, foster greater collaboration, and deliver meaningful value to communities across both nations.
