Hyundai Confirms IONIQ 2 Development, September 2026 Debut

Hyundai Confirms IONIQ 2 Development, September 2026 Debut

Posted on July 2, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Hyundai Confirms IONIQ 2 Development, September 2026 Debut

Hyundai is preparing to unveil a new all-electric compact car — AKA IONIQ 2 —in the coming months, according to a report from Autocar. Internally codenamed “BJ1,” the new model is widely anticipated to launch as the Hyundai IONIQ 2, extending the brand’s IONIQ EV family with a more affordable, compact option.

Positioned Between Hyundai Inster and Kona Electric

The IONIQ 2 will be positioned between the Hyundai Inster and Kona Electric in terms of size and pricing. With dimensions close to the combustion-powered Hyundai Bayon, this new electric crossover will compete directly with other small EVs like the Renault 4 and Volvo EX30.

Developed in tandem with Kia’s upcoming EV2, the BJ1/IONIQ 2 will share architecture and several components, making it a cost-effective EV for urban and suburban buyers.

Reveal Planned Soon, Launch Expected in Q3 2026

Hyundai’s new European CEO, Xavier Martinet, confirmed that the vehicle will be revealed “in the next few months”, with a market launch targeted for Q3 2026. If production stays on schedule, first customer deliveries could begin as early as July 2026. Kia’s EV2 is expected to arrive slightly earlier.

“We are very much involved with the electrification of our line-up and to increase our electrified mix in the coming years,” said Martinet, signaling Hyundai’s accelerated EV rollout.

Powered by Hyundai’s E-GMP Electric Platform

The Hyundai BJ1 (IONIQ 2) will be built on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform)—a highly flexible architecture that underpins Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs.

It’s expected to share battery and motor configurations with the slightly larger Kia EV3, including:

  • A 58.3kWh battery offering up to 267 miles (430 km)
  • An 81.4kWh battery capable of around 372 miles (599 km)
  • A single front-mounted electric motor producing 201bhp and 209lb ft (283Nm) of torque

These specs would offer class-leading range and performance in the compact EV segment.

Interior: Smart Tech and Driver-Centric Design

The IONIQ 2 will feature a “step change” in cabin technology, according to Autocar. Expect a new adaptive infotainment system that modifies ambient lighting and cabin sound profiles based on driving style or mode.

A combined digital display, spanning about half the width of the dashboard, will integrate both the instrument cluster and infotainment interface, delivering a clean, minimalist design similar to the one planned for Kia’s EV2.

Competitive Pricing Around €30,000 (£25,000)

Hyundai is aiming for a starting price near €30,000 (£25,000), placing the IONIQ 2 among the most affordable electric crossovers in Europe. This makes it an attractive option for drivers looking to switch to electric without stretching their budget.
