Introduction

The 2022 Macan is a premium sport-inspired compact SUV from Porsche and its second-best-selling vehicle in 2022, after its larger sibling, the Cayenne. It reinforces the importance of SUVs for performance luxury brands and their bottom lines. The Macan’s popularity is rooted in its 911-like handling, melded with the versatility and spaciousness of a small SUV. For 2022, it retains those Porsche traits, but gets a facelift as well as some reconfiguring to better suit its buyer base. Officials eliminated the Macan Turbo while moving the GTS atop the now 3-trim lineup. With standard rear-biased all-wheel drive (AWD), the Macan brings the best of Porsche heritage and superior engineering to the convenience and flexibility of a rising class of compact SUVs. Leaning into the sportier side of SUV life, the Macan excels beyond its rivals with a well-balanced drive and finely tuned suspension.

The undercurrent of elegant design welcomes you into the vehicle and reminds you of the heritage and legacy of the Porsche brand and the strength of the design team. The 2022 Porsche Macan’s exterior revision includes updates to the front and rear fascias, and the black side-trim panels now have a 3D texture. This brings it closer in appearance to the Cayenne. The revisions aren’t limited to the Macan’s appearance. The brand tweaked the base engine, adding 13 horsepower. Additionally, the new Macan S features a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine similar to what powers the GTS. The 3.0-liter V6 powerplant was discontinued. The GTS, which now occupies the top spot, gets a new option package, dubbed the GTS Sport Package. It’s a separate appearance package featuring more black accents, carbon-fiber interior trim, 18-way adaptive sport seats, high-performance tires, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, plus the contents of the Sport Chrono Package. The suspension is stiffened by 10% in front and 15% in back.

While competing against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Jaguar F-Pace, the Macan never fails to remind you who’s boss. That starts with what’s under the hood, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbo inline 4-cylinder putting out 261 hp. And while that’s fine — and an upgrade from 2021’s 248 hp starter model — it’s not what keeps people coming back for more. If there was ever a “pocket rocket” at Porsche, the Macan S and GTS Turbo both qualify, using different versions of a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 putting out 375 hp and 434 hp, respectively.

The lineup uses a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission regardless of engine and trim. Creating a dynamic blend of sports cars and SUVs riding on a beautifully balanced chassis, the Macan is a performance beast dressed in comfortable clothes with echoes of the beloved 911.

The Macan boasts an interior that is well-executed and unmatched in functionality and material quality. The dash’s 10.9-inch touchscreen and many buttons are the focal points above the center stack. Textiles are elevated, and stitching is neatly finished. Seating is comfortable and firm, and the 40/20/40 rear seat folds to create more space, up to 53 cubic feet.
