Hey everyone, looking for some guidance with troubleshooting a relative’s 2004 C70 Convertible. The top stopped working many years ago, they took it to the dealership but got spooked by the repair cost. The dealer manually put the top down and that’s where it stayed. They know I’m into volvos so they asked me to take a look.

I scanned it with my vida dice and got the following:

Text White Screenshot Font Number

*For future google searchers: CAB-120 CAB-130 CAB-150 CAB-212 CAB-213 CAB-214 CAB-215 CAB-216

If it helps, here are the parameters and their values associated with the CAB module that I grabbed:

Parameter Value
Parkbreake Active
Switch conv. down Not active
Switch conv. up Not active
Switch conv. up n Not active
Front lock, rear Active
Front lock, front
Rear lock, right
Rear lock, left Not active
Front lock Off
Coverlock Active
TB, up Not active
Rear window heater Not active
Speed signal Active
Facia LED Not active
Air condition Not active
Coverlock motor Not active
Battery voltage 12.08 V
Su. Pot. C 4.78 V
Su. Pot. L 4.78 V
Si. Pot. L 2.28 V
Si. Pot. C 4.42 V

Here are some other details and observations I made when checking out the car.

  • When pressing the button for putting the top up the light on the button flashes. Also when pressing it the illumination on the gauge cluster dims, suggesting that power is going somewhere to try and move the top.
  • The drivers side sun visor had broken off. This exposes some wires which I assume are for the garage door opener buttons. But since it’s so close to the roof latch, I figure it could potentially be affecting a circuit related to it.

  • Driver and passenger windows are not fully functional. They don’t roll up or down all the way and their movement is not smooth at all. *Note, they had this repaired previously but took it to someone who doesn’t do good work.
  • They claim the rear of the car was backed into (parking lot speeds) right before the top stopped working. But I am doubtful that would’ve cause the top to stop working. I checked the rear latch and everything appeared in order.
  • Probably unrelated but on a cold start the car has trouble idling, thought this was because the battery was shot but still happened when I went back over with a good battery.

Please chime in with any info or experience with these tops, or preferably the solution to the problem. 😂

Any common failure points I should check?

Also the top seems to be stuck and doesn’t want to go up if I try manually. Could the dealer locked it in place as a safety precaution? Or is it more likely locked up from not moving for so many years.

Thanks in advanced!
